Version: World Wind 1.3.1.1
"Great viewing for Windows 95 and Windows 98"
Pros: Well, I don't know how many of those old os are still in service. Most adults gave them to their kids or threw them out in the trash. But if your kids are using your old 95 or 98, download World Wind. It is pretty awesome, and it is free. For the 21st century users.... try Google Earth instead.
Cons: The download size is HUGE. It's as big as "Gone with the Wind" almost. Dialup users could leave on a week's vacation and it might be done when they came back.

Version: World Wind 1.3.1.1
"Only really worthwhile if you can't use Google Earth on your system."
Pros: Does have a reasonable collection of tools and images. A great selection of interesting and random user made plug ins and add ons. The best alternative to Google Earth for those of us not running Windows XP / 2000 and therefor unable to install Google Earth on our systems.
Cons: Respect to these guys for their hard work, but it definitely has turned into a quantity over quality thing. The extras are cute and all but I'd be so much happier if like Google earth they had closer zooms and more effective use of satellite imagery. Very joggy / jumpy too, could do with being smoothed over a bit. Not a patch on Google Earth.

"This is supposed to be NASA."
Pros: This program uses satellite technology to deliver pictures of many places on Earth. As far as the landscape viewing goes, this is fabulous. I like the way that you can view mountains with this software. If you have Windows 95, 98, or ME this may be a good try for you, but...
Cons: HUGE HUGE HUGE download. If you have dial-up, you will never be able to get this thing. And to download the information to make it work, you need to have broadband. No two ways about it. It takes up a ton of space on the harddrive; over 500 MB. And what is worse, it eats memory like Garfield eats Lasagna. I have a very fast computer...512MB RAM, 2.8Ghz processor, and this program degraded my computer's performance so much that I simply could not use it if I was using any other program. Slowed my PC to a crawl. The features are not that plentiful. You can get general area information, but compared to Google Earth, the information this program gives is minimal. Google Earth far outshines this program. The download is smaller, the picutres more detailed, the information FAR more plentiful, and the performance better. On some locations, if you zoom in too close, the screen actually kind of breaks, and you can see parts of the whole globe in the break. That is freaky, and this download is too huge to have those kind of clipping problems. I wonder how Google could create a program that is FAR BETTER than NASA. If you simply can't use Google Earth, then use this. But I would *really* try to get Google Earth. It outshines this software in every way.
