Editors' review

Words With Friends is essentially an Android and iPhone alternative to the classic board game Scrabble. You can choose to play against a friend from your contact list, find a friend by username, play a random opponent, or pass-and-play with a friend on a single device.

Just as in the classic board game, you are given seven lettered tiles with which you must create words--vertically or horizontally--on the board. Your goal, with the help of scattered bonus squares, is to score more points than your opponent before the tiles run out. The great thing is that you can play at your own pace, and you can play several games simultaneously, either with friends or with random opponents from around the world. And there's a built-in chat function no matter whom you are playing with. The app will even notify you when it's your turn, unless, of course, you disable the option.

If you're a fan of classic Scrabble or word games in general, we highly recommend trying Words With Friends. While there are other, similar games available (Wordfeud, Scrabble for iPhone), Words With Friends is one of the most popular, meaning it has more users with whom you can play. On the other hand, we do think Words With Friends could use a built-in dictionary and perhaps a two-letter word list. While some Scrabble purists might scoff at the use of such tools, we happen to like them. Whatever your view on the matter, Words With Friends is still a worthwhile download. And because it features a different board layout from its competitors, you might just want to download all of them.

"Buggy application with no tech support response"

    March 06, 2014   |   By NovBunny

    Version: Words With Friends 7.10

    Pros

    Fun game. Auto scores.

    Cons

Too long of a wait to resign a game. A handful off common words aren't allowed, for example, one being GAY. Adverts, but it's a free app so expected, but adverts can more or less be skipped. More importantly BUGGY. NO SUPPORT WITH AFOREMENTIONED BUGS.PROBLEMS: 1 a,b&c) the app logs me out when I navigate out of the app for a short time, sleep my device, or turn my device off. 2) once it's logged me off a slew of previously deleted games comes back up. Once it's logged me off every single previously read messages comes up as a new message. This also had the effect of messing up the order of my active games in play. Every time I have to sign back on the app goes through a long process of "updating" --you'd think to fix itself, but no joy there! I've complained regularly for nearly a year and nothing has been done. I'VE BEEN REPEATEDLY INFORMING WWF ABOUT THESE SAME ISSUES FOR ALMOST A YEAR! Problems which did not occur when I first started using the app.

    "Great Mind Game"

    October 15, 2011   |   By prourk

    Version: Words With Friends 4.09

    Pros

Keeps your mind active and a lot to do in the middle of the night!

    Cons

I agree about stability. I have had to reinstall and even go to the extent of "bringing it back to life" from my itunes saved apps. And there are times that it is aggravatingly slow. Additionally, there have been times I've tried to play a word and the game says no dice. The very next turn, my opponent plays that exact same word for big points!

    Summary

But for the all the irritants, still a great game.

    "Free and addicting"

    April 13, 2011   |   By LBerkman

    Version: Words With Friends 3.12

    Pros

It's fun and makes me think more than other games. I look forward to my friends posting words... hearing that bloop bloop just makes me smile!

    Cons

Sometimes it crashes or mixes up my puzzles.

    Summary

Great game.. works across networks too. I have a droid and can still play with my friends who have iPhones
