CNET Editors' note: This downloadable version of Windows Vista is an upgrade only. Users can upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate from Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Media Center, or Windows XP Tablet PC.
CNET Editors' review
The bad: Windows Vista Ultimate does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); there's simply too much and not all of it is implemented properly; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.
The bottom line: Windows Vista is essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use. Reviewed by: Robert Vamosi; Reviewed on: 1/23/07; Release date: 1/30/07

"Seen em all, none compare!"
Version: Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2)
Pros
I've been using Vista since 2-2007 & had issues from the beginning. But when I bought Ultimate, the real world of Vista was unlocked. Graphically excellent! Fast! but when makes it so great is it's built in "Complete PC Backup". It images itself.
Cons
Without the service pack on the DVD, formatting is a slow process. Theres 108 updates on mine not including 9 optional ones. Sometimes sensitive to softeare niot written for Vista but thats all my complaints, plain & simple.
Summary
If your gonna use Vista, Ultimate or Business are the only 2 ways to go. Their buily in "Complete PC Backup" is the only drive image I've ever recovered that brought back a stable system. Not Acronis, Ghost, Paragon or any of the others are even close to Ultimates built in drive imaging capabilities. That alone make it worth every cent & if you shop on line, you can find ir as cheap as $130 with SP-1. It's the only way to run a Vista system.
