    "Good - but be patient"

    September 18, 2009  |   By anaxcrosswords

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1

    Pros

Most of the controls are intuitive and straightforward to use - and it's free.

    Cons

Some commenters describe the software as apt to freeze. It does - but the key is to leave it for a few minutes; generally it comes back to life (I've never had it crash completely). Some transitions are very clunky in the exported movie file.

    Summary

If you don't have any video editing software this free facility is definitely worth having (hey - an internet user who can spell "definitely". Rare thing huh?). Exporting of movie files isn't quick, but I've seen much worse - and the ability to specify a filesize is a real bonus. Don't expect effects-laden brilliance and you won't be disappointed; it has pretty much all you need - import of movie clips, photos, music/sound, transitions, animated titles, credits. If I'd paid for it I might grumble about the temporary freezes that can fool you into thinking the software has crashed. I might even complain that the pause/play transport functions can sometimes appear to have minds of their own.

But it's FREE. And as free software goes you get a fair amount for your absence of outlay.

"Nice Software, Free, Easy to learn but has quirks"

    September 12, 2009  |   By 1PunchKO

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1

    Pros

I didn't find it as easy as the editor did to learn the software, it was rather easy and I've never had any previous experience working with a video editor.

    Cons

I do agree with the editor, it made great videos when it worked but half the time importing videos made the system freeze and yes, I have a nice computer. There's something there MS needs to work on! Didn't support many video downloads either.

    Summary

Liked it alot, got to make a couple really nice videos before I started hitting the wall with the system freezing on importing videos an doesn't like a lot of videos like when you use "Real" to download youtube, etc so a converter is needed to make the videos editable. These are two big bugs MS Needs to work on but how can you complain about something free?

"Fine for small projects. Larger projects Take an age."

    September 9, 2009  |   By ConBrod

Version: Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP) 2.1

    Pros

It is very easy to use for basic editing of your home movies.

    Cons

Saving large projects after editing, in your required format, will either; not save to the hard drive or may take many hours,

    Summary

I found that the software did not require as big a learning curve as most other more advanced products do. I found the features perfect for my requirements: to cut and paste, add transition effects, sound ect, all very easy to do. It took quite a lot of hours to find out how to get a finished project to save, in the format that I required, on the hard disc. Because the video was large I only discovered I could not save it after editing. Larger projects need to be imported and edited in small segments, saved, re-imported and saved again as a bigger file, which can than take hours to save to the hard drive for burning to DVD. This software could be perfect for users like me who want basic editing tools easy to learn and use. But the inability to save large projects makes it frustrating to use.
