"Don't even think about it without a new computer!"
I have Windows 7 on a new computer. Aside from the well documented difficulties getting Windows 7 to network with XP machines, and its incompatibility with just about everything including Microsoft Office 2003, it works fine.
You will have to buy new versions of all your software. You will have to upgrade all of your hardware more than a year old.
Windows 7 is proof that Microsoft intends to bolster the economy by forcing everyone to buy all new hardware and software. Nothing older than a year works. Many manufacturers do not have Windows 7 drivers out for products more than a year old. I am canning it and going back to XP. What a waste of money.
