"Support for RAR, ISO, ACE would be nice!"

    January 8, 2005  |

    Version: WinZip 9.0 SR-1

    Summary

Why pay $29 for this program that doesn't support RAR files. Most of the files downloaded off the web today are RAR files. Get PowerArchiver, costs $19, it supports ZIP, 7-Zip, CAB, LHA (LZH), TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2, BH, RAR, ARJ, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZ, BZIP2, XXE, MIME, UUE, and YENC file.

    "a worthy competitor"

    January 3, 2005  |

    Version: WinZip 9.0 SR-1

    Summary

:-) It is nice to hear that lots of people are recommending WinRAR over WinZIP. "QualityOverTrashTalk"s comment has forced me to write this as we like to play the game fair. a) we don't have as many employees as people who have commented on this. We believe that WinRAR users are just more closely bound to our program, so they even recommend it when other tools are being rated.
    b) the recommendations are quite understandable. Even download.com's comment itself is mentioning that compatibility is not a positive aspect of WinZIP.
I personally think that WinZIP is easier to use, but WinRAR is more stable and has a lot more functions not to forget the many translations and different operating systems RAR is designed for.

So if you like it easy stick to WInZIP if you need sophisticated, try WinRAR ;-)

    "Answers to harvardjanitor's question??"

    January 2, 2005  |

    Version: WinZip 9.0 SR-1

    Summary

Winzip is a great utility, but has anyone answered the question by "harvardjanitor"? If we give up our old version and get 9.0, will we have to pay in order to use it?

"What is the point of this?"

    January 1, 2005  |

    Version: WinZip 9.0 SR-1

    Summary

Winzip would be great if it supported other formats other than .zip. WinRAR on the other hand supports all kinds of files. If you have windows xp you dont even need winzip since it built in. I would reccomend winRAR.

    "BETTER ALTERNATIVES"

    December 26, 2004  |

    Version: WinZip 9.0 SR-1

    Summary

There is nothing wrong with Winzip but there are better alternatives. If you want to keep on working with the zip format, you should download AlZip. The latter programme allows you to create zip and a few other archives but it also enables you to
open 35 archive types which includes iso, rar, ace, cab, etc. The programme is small(2mb) given it`s tremendous functionality and looks nice. If you are looking for a programme that will give you the best overall compression rate, try
WinImp. I am yet to see any other format that can match the imp format. It beats rar hands down and is even better than the new 7 zip format. WinImp is very small in size. I use Winimp to create the
smallest possible archives(imp) and Alzip to open all other archives that I may encounter. You can`t do better than this, trust me.
