    "Don't use it"

    August 15, 2014  |   By ajgbali

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

It does actually unzip files... It seems to do a whole lot of other stuff to, but that's not what I needed it for....

    Cons

    1. Slowed computer to a crawl.
    2. Installed adware, despite my care during installation.
    3. Turned off AVG antivirus

    Summary

The slowness made the program unusable and the adware and antivirus disruption makes me completely mistrust it.
CNET - condoning programs that act like this with no mention of the cons makes me lose trust in your recommendations too. Are you so confident in your usefulness that you're just not bothered anymore?

    "Overpriced & Bloated"

    May 19, 2014  |   By NJPete61

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

One of the very first windows based file archiving tools, can un-compress many archive formats.

    Cons

This has become bloated & over priced.

    Summary

7-zip (7-zip.org) is an outstanding "Open Source" (free) alternative, that works great.

    "Browser Hijacking"

    May 5, 2014  |   By wmhess

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

The best thing I can say about it is that it was once a good company

    Cons

Unasked for, and unwanted browser hijackinging when updating the Pro version. No warning, no option not acceptable

    Summary

Look for another program they're a dime a dozen, and just as good.

    "Bundled with malware!"

    April 24, 2014  |   By Anthrobran

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

    Great for .rar files

    Cons

Comes bundled with Linkey malware. Not difficult to remove, but frustrating.

    Summary

If you download, make sure that you do a custom installation. The ONE time that I do the recommended installation on a program, I get Linkey. I uninstalled the program simply because I do not want to deal with any more surprises.

    "Goodbye Winzip - Never again"

    April 23, 2014  |   By lesking

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

Good track record of excellent service going back to the earliest DOS editions(PKZIP, etc.).

    Cons

Current version (18) downloads a whole load of junk software which hijacks your browsers and takes a lot of effort to clear-out.

I suspect that the version enthusiastically reviewed by CNET was rather 'cleaner' that the installation package provided for download.

Of course, the initial installation is a 'trial' version and it may be that the paid-for version doesn't have these issues - but I don't intend to pay around £25 just to find out.

    Summary

Isn't it about time that software suppliers were banned from installing 'extras' which you never asked for - even the most reputable companies (AVG, ADOBE, etc.) are 'at it' with various toolbars and other add-ins which can easily mess-up your existing software.

Computer abuse (Computaphelia) should be made a criminal offence.

Perhaps somebody should start a new pressure group - Campaign Against **** Software (CASS)

    "Took over my computer"

    April 18, 2014  |   By icedrips

    Version: WinZip 18

    Pros

Good for work stuff as long as it's someone else's computer.

    Cons

I downloaded the free version and it was an absolute nightmare. It downloaded some malware and viruses and I couldn't get it off of my computer. It refused to be removed. I had to call some tech guys I know to remove it. Winzip made my anti-virus software turn on and off. The six hours it took to remove it allowed 34 malicious items to enter my computer. I had to remove and reinstall my anti-virus software because it would not come back to life after the invasion. I saw the "blue screen of death" several times throughout the rest of the day. I can't imagine why people would spend money on this horror.

    Summary

    Buyer beware.
