"WARNING - DO NOT DOWNLOAD - INFECTED FILE!!!"

    by alexbg1972 on November 28, 2008

Pros: Nothing to like about this - stay well clear!!!!!

Cons: See below - 250 characters is not enough for what I want to say about this crappy piece of software!

Summary: Warning - This file will give you a serious amount of grief if you download it to your system. This IS NOT a valid file - as per the other posts, you will see the pop up INTERVALHEHEHE message being generated constantly, and believe me, this is a nightmare to get rid of.

After much work, I ended up wiping my system clean, and starting again - as my AV product didn't pick up on this, and all my PC Security Tools failed to remove it also.

This download will hijack your browser - and will totally screw up your hosts file. You can try removing the installed file, in an attempt to get rid of the infection - but this won't work, you will still see the INTERVALHEHEHE message being displayed.

So - be warned - unless you want to cause yourself hours of unecessary work - DO NOT TOUCH THIS FILE.

    Thanks

    Alex

I did the free trial from rarlab.com and its been working great I love it, but I was looking to purchase it because it says I had one day left with the free trial. I came across this site and Im a little freaked out now. What do I do? How do I know that what I downloaded is not a fake?

WinRAR is indeed a very fine and harmless program.
But you have downloaded your version from from a malafide site.

Ive used Winrar and I do not get any of those messages when I uninstall it. Ive got 5 AV scanners, and 1 firewall. Ive got COMODO Firewall + Anti Virus, Malwarebyts' Anti Malware, Advanced Spyware remover, Norton Scanner, and McAfee Scanner, and none of them show any signs of viruses on my computer.

I think you may have downloaded something else. Because Cnet is very good for its software. They test their software daily to make sure there are no types of Malware, spyware, crapware, and viruses.

everyone should click the /!\ report button on ''winrarteam'' comment to report the virus notification to the admin & how come its www.rarlabs.com could be fake official site with the extra ''s'' behind if u click the From RARLAB publisher link & not www.rarlab.com, true official site i download few months back with no virus...

I have used Winrar for years and downloaded it several times. I have never had any issues with the software and it does not do anything you say it has done on your system. Your warning it doesn't hold water.

How did you clean your PC

  • reply by: craiggf on December 9, 2008

    this fix works
i as of 5 min ago just got rid of this problem,
steps to follow to rid your pc of this
1DO NOT download what it sais to download on the internet explorer
    2uninstal the fake winrar
3 in system32 folder theres a exe labled explore.exe, and has a winrar file icon if you try to deleat it it wont let you, so open task manager and go to "Processes" and end the prosess tree for "explore.exe" DO NOT CONFUSE WITH "explorer.exe", which has an "r"
as soon as youve ended the processes tree deleate the "explore.exe" from system32.
4empty the recycle bin or shred it if you can
    5now go to system32/drivers/etc/host
open the host file with notepad
    deleat everything and save.
open firefox or iexplorer and hopefuly it should be back to normal
i got rid of it without use of anitivirus

I Had the same problem on my laptop after downloading this file & ended up reformatting to get rid of this infection

  • reply by: winrarteam on December 3, 2008

    Dear WinRAR users,

It came to our knowledge that certain WinRAR downloads from the links advertised through Download.com contain infection files. We are currently working on clearing this problem.
In order to avoid such misleading and infection WinRAR downloads, we strongly recommend you not to use ad links like 'free WInRAR', etc. Instead, please download your trial version of WinRAR only from secure sources: the link offered directly by Download.com, from our official websites www.win-rar.com or www.rarlab.com, or from the websites of our partners (you can find the list of our partners on our official websites).

Thank you for your support and understanding!

    Your WinRAR Team

    BEWARE INFECTED FILES

I was coming here to post the same thing.
I downloaded it yesterday aqnd finally got the SOB deleted out of my system today. TG for Avast. The virus takes control and you can not delete WinRAR icon off your desk top until you finally get rid of the virus itself.
The irritating popup box just keeps popping up laughing at you

    BEWARE - INFECTED FILES

Did you really have to wipe your system clean? So sad that I did not see your post here. Mr. Interval has taken over. Did anything else happen due to the virus?
