"I remember a similar app early in widows around 3.1"

    July 11, 2015  |   By GarretMoore

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

This is like a long lost friend from the past, but all grown up. I love it and have it now on all my personal systems. I love the visual context as I can more easily see where things are and volumes I can immediately understand.

    Cons

None yet and no parasitic hidden apps and spies.

    Summary

Great help in maintaining my systems. Visual tool I'll rave about to others.

"2 hours to scan a drive"

    April 5, 2015  |   By Linda8971

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

    Cluttered display

    Cons

The time it takes to scan a drive is more than the time it will take to copy it.
    Really poor.

    Summary

Tried other tools that are WAY faster.

"Great for finding what is taking up all the space!"

    February 15, 2015  |   By jandsm5321

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

    Works fast
    Small program
    Free
    Easy to use

    Cons

Be careful how you use it!

    Summary

Shows a colored map of all the files on your computer, sorts them by folder so you can see what folders take up the most space (program files, documents, etc).

I use it to find those leftover files programs leave behind when uninstalled, usually in the documents folders.

Just please be careful what you delete if you are cleaning up files.

    "Locate and analyse"

    June 13, 2014  |   By tylerm_prc

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

    Your files:
Not necessarily delete. Many of modern computers have large enough drives you don't have to do this.

It gives a graphical representation of file size.

    Drill down by attachment type.

Look at percentages according to directory and file type.

    Cons

    UI looks a bit 70's.

    Summary

    Nice.
    Good fun product.

All in all, it gives you a graphical representation of your drive(s) and see if you want actually delete anything.

"The program you never knew you needed until you had it"

    September 13, 2013  |   By tallmabey

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

Allows you to see which folders or file types are taking up the most space, making it easier to grok the true makeup of your computer's storage. Not something you need to run on a regular basis, but once you are used to having it around, doing disk cleanup will always feel like it's missing something without WinDirStat.

    Cons

Yes, it does take a while to scan the drive or folder you ask it to inspect. But personally, I prefer this to something that runs all the time in the background, especially since you only need to use it every once in a while.

    Summary

The user that claimed this isn't free must be on the wrong page or something, because you can even download the source code from *multiple* repositories (SourceForge, Bitbucket, GitHub). See http://windirstat.info/download.html for details.

"There ARE better and faster FREE disk space utilities."

    August 27, 2013  |   By TheChairman33

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

    Shows the map in color.

    Cons

VERY SLOW compared to other free utilities.

SpaceSniffer is faster and more informative, and you can recursively drill-down on the map.

'Scanner' is another: it displays in a radial format, which is cleaner and more intuitive.

    Summary

    Skip it.

    "Great Program"

    August 1, 2013  |   By Wittigpc

    Version: WinDirStat 1.1.2

    Pros

I has a Server that was pushing Max Density on the C Drive. This program showed me just where my space was being allocated in about 1 minute. I would instantly see where the problem was and fix it straight away.

    Cons

I didn't know about this program before now...

    Summary

If you got a drive filling up, this will pinpoint just where the space is being used.
