    "Misleading Software"

    December 21, 2004  |   By Flabergasted

I have used this product for nearly 2 years thinking that i am deleting files 'beyond recovery'

Boy was i wrong, until i discovered a program known as RecoverMy Files , everything i thought I had deleted over the 2 years started to pop up in my screen one by one. I couldnt believe it. I sent an email to webroot customer service, they replied saying, "you need to increase the wiping level to a minimum of 7 passes (known as GUTMAN method) so nothing can be retrieved by any recovery program" and add 'bleach' which is an extra security measure". The irony was i already had it on 35 passes with bleach option enabled. SO i email webroot back, and i still havent heard since...

I recently came across a program called East Tec Eraser 2004 which has the option to delete previously 'deleted files'. I ran the software with selecting previously 'deleted files'it took ages 7 hours roughly and tehn i ran Recover my files nothing was their, no pictures nothing, all destroyed. Put windows washer to the test with Recover my Files or a similar reovery tool which is downloadable at no charge and see for your self. Windows washer should be banned as it is very misleading and useless!!!

I have had the same problem with this program, and it is not an intermittent error .

As to the reply from element361 computers work differently on his/her planet!!

Unfortunately, the files you are claiming window washer never deleted, it is not designed to delete at all. you mention pictures here? window washer is a software to remove internet cache temporary files and cookies, not your unwanted documents and pictures. Also, even if you found that these were not being wiped from your computer by the software, it is indeed your computer preventing them from being deleted, not window washer. I suggest you look into other programs you run that might be security programs such as Norton or anyother antivirus, firewall, or restore programs, many of them have a back up setting that backsup any and all things you delete for later recovery.

Thank you Flabergasted! I have been having problems with my laptop for months. It ran real slow. Webroot Window Washer was recommend as a cleaning software for my problems. I read all the mails concerning this product and took your advice regarding East Tec Eraser. I downloaded the file and wiped the free space on the hard drive. I then ran the "ERASE BEYOND RECOVERY" feature on my recycle bin. I was surprised to find documents in the bin that had been erased prior to reformatting the hard drive from Win2k to XP. I tested it using a file recovery program which found nothing.

    Thank you very much mate!

I will purchase the product in spite of the price and recommed it to anyone looking for a good file remover software!
