Web of Trust (WOT) for Firefox provides users with a simple meter for gauging a Web site's danger level. With easy to read warnings, this program only leaves one thing to chance with your safety.

The program does not have anything to offer on your computer's desktop because it embeds itself into your Firefox browser for quick access. Depending on the Web site you visit, the program's icon turns red, yellow, or green to illustrate the danger level. Clicking on the icon displays a chart showcasing Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, and Child Safety. The warnings are intuitive and should not require a trip to the Help file to understand. The program functioned well for our tests, glowing green for popular news sites and red for less reliable pages. Our only complaint is that users must dig into the settings menu to have WOT stop a dangerous site from opening on your computer. So until that time, concerned users may be exposed to potentially harmful sites. However, once this is activated, the program does a great job of warning you and providing the option to continue or stop. WOT also provides interesting features that allow worldwide users to rate Web sites for danger, thus creating an online community of like-minded people.

With a simple interface, easy-to-understand functions, and interesting features, we found this freeware to be a helpful download for users looking to increase their online security.

"WOT has become a joke on its own."

August 27, 2013  |  By Soft4Boost

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

There are so much false reportings!

Cons

Nothing, only lie

Summary

I have given up on it years ago due to the many false claims, it is too bad the don't fix it, but by the looks of it they won't. Anyone can claim anything bad about a site using them and they won't fix it! just check into it if you don't believe me. Used to be good when first come out but really now just a waist of time actually using it, IMHO!

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

Cons

how can you trust this add on its based on what people think is acceptable anyone can rate a web site down with this so of course they can rate it bad for their own agenda based on anything ie political views religious views this whole plug in is flawed.
Don't people see this is the case.

Summary

why use a tool that is flawed.

Updated on Jul 31, 2013

i used this for a few day i noticed users giving sites poor ratings for silly reason some political some just because they didn't like the product. One completely safe site it gave a red circle yet it gives a green circle to a porn site that injects malware and such on your pc even green circles torrent sites that are breaking the law.Its complete nonsense.

"There is no way to make WOT users review a bad rating"

July 24, 2013  |  By JohnTM99

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

I see no pros in unfettered censorship.

Cons

I will simply tell my experience with WOT. Some WOT users rated my website badly because some antivirus marked my software as virus infected. After contacting the antivirus companies they corrected this mistake, now my software is not marked as infected by them. But WOT will not review the previous rating.
Websites like WOT can destroy the livelihood of small business easily, they are not responsible, but act like hooligans.

"Ignore the BS Campaign"

July 22, 2013  |  By zawinul

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

Longstanding, proven, and accurate user ratings system that will help you stay virus, spyware, and malware free as well as avoiding extremist and bunk websites.

Cons

There are a few glitches that might render a website a bad rating who doesn't deserve it, but WOT has balanced that flaw with a special focus on their forum where website owners can complain and get a more accurate, fair analysis.

Summary

A must have for any person who surf's the web and values privacy and safety.
DO NOT pay any attention to the recent campaign of malware-laden and untrusted websites who have been slandering WOT because it outs that person's untrustworthy website. The irony is that these folks are saying WOT is politically-bent or doesn't have a fair ratings system when they, in fact, are upset because they can't gain enough power over WOT to fool unsuspecting users to visit their untrusted website.
Bottom line: WOT works.

"Cannot trust ratings at all on this system"

June 06, 2013  |  By CanadianMoondog

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

Sorry, cannot think of one

Cons

The rating system is completely user level weighted and therefore if one individual doesn't like another and they have a far greater user level, they can make a rating that damages the other persons rating to such a level that they can never fix it. I have seen several individuals do this to others on this site simply because they wound up in an argument with another member.

Once you are registered and have registered your site with them, you can never remove it and google displays the ratings.

Summary

Used to be a good system but has been has been overrun by people who like to push others around.

My advice is to stay as far away from this system as possible.

"Used for political censorship"

June 03, 2013  |  By ChdeLang

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

A good idea in theory, horribly implemented

Cons

Used to censor political opinions
Used to censor alternative thinking
Used to censor people they dislike

Summary

The system of WOT (Web of Trust) is misleading. Contrary to their mission to provide average ratings from users, the ratings are actually of their moderators which (if numbers add up), spend 23 hours per day rating sites without actually inspecting them.

To add to its shenanigans, WOT usually likes to rate any competing services as "extremely harmful" and claims them to be "unsafe for children".

"Horrible plugin and forum. Takes pleasure in lying."

June 01, 2013  |  By phoenixgymbkk

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

Nothing. Their message and promise seem great, but it does nothing it states.

Cons

The forum is a group of moderators that make personal decision on wheather your site is harmful based on nothing. They like to make lies and bogus comments out of joy. Offers no protection.

Summary

Skip this and stick with something like AVG, AVAST, or Advance System Care for actual protection. Do not submit your website there.

"False reportings"

May 29, 2013  |  By judywei

 |  Version: WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox 20130515

Pros

Nothing that I can tell. It is just used to bash businesses.

Cons

High level users dictate wheather a website is "harmful" or not. No moderation and false reportings.

Summary

I first went to this website to leave a comment for another website that was false reported. This then brought attacks to my website. I dont see a way to have your website's reputation improved after their high level users slander it. You will just be marked as spam if you try to comment favorably. Support does nothing to help. They do more on here to try and hide these comments.
