      "Better than AGFA software"

      June 06, 2014   |   By LadyDogHaven

      Version: VueScan 9.2.23

      Pros

Easy to setup (< 5 mins)
      Easy to use
      Faster than original mfr software

      Cons

      Haven't found any

      Summary

      Recommended to friends and family.

I use VueScan 32x with an AGFA SnapScan 1212u and it works like a dream. Wish I had found this years ago.

      Updated on Jun 6, 2014

Recommend VueScan to friends and family.

I use VueScan 32x with an AGFA SnapScan 1212u. Finding this driver was easier than sifting through scads of current scanners to find a new workhorse and determining a cost efficient disposal of the old working unit.

VueScan works like a dream. Wish I had it from the start.

"Easy to learn; produces fine results."

      April 26, 2014   |   By illini1956

      Version: VueScan 9.2.23

      Pros

The contols seem to have been simplified from the version 8. There is flexibility to produce anything from a quick black-and-white scan to a fine color photo copy. It does not try to out-think the user as so many scan softwares do.

      Cons

It took a bit of study to understand how my paid license applied to the forced conversion to Windows 7 on a new PC; however, when I understood, it was very fair. Older versions are downloaded from another source as compared to the latest version. This alternate vendor tried excessively hard to push unwanted additional software onto my PC. It took a while to get rid of it. This is not a problem with the new version.

      Summary

I would be lost without this software. I have several other copy programs, but I don't use them.

"Obnoxious developer with a semi-uesful product"

      December 15, 2013   |   By Abundition

      Version: VueScan 9.2.23

      Pros

When this software works it is very useful.

      Cons

Hamrick provided absolutely no help for any of the problems that I've submitted to him. Instead his reply e-mail is accusatory. This is a I got your money and you get the shaft kind of person.

Continually I receive updates for this program. Somewhere on the order of one per week. The updates usually defunct the entire program. The latest one is classic for Hamrick. Now I can only scan in one page, and the .pdf is blank.

My frustration is that I, like most of you, have scheduled reports that I must submit. Scanning in receipts and such, and sending them via e-mail or via on-line websites is a must. I need a program that I can count on that performs when I need it and does what it is supposed to do.
You will not find it here.

Rather, I must use HP's rather crude utility to switch from print to scan, and scan to computer, and save as a .pdf. Sometimes I have to use Acrobat's ability to bundle several .pdf's into one file so I can attach only one file to my work.

      Summary

Useful if it works but absolutely no customer service and no useful information from the developer. My impression is the developer will not provide any help at all for your questions. Do not waste your money on this product.

"Good software, nasty person to deal with"

      November 30, 2013   |   By CorrectHorse

      Version: VueScan 9.2.23

      Pros

The software *was* really is very good. I used it for years without a problem, and it bettered the software from HP in that it made good PDF files, whereas the "official" HP software made PDF files that most PDF software rejected as invalid.

      Cons

V9.3 introduced pestering "you can update to a new version" messages (useless users who do not have administrative privileges) and then to 9.4, when it did not scan properly with our scanner. Dealing with the software author got me nowhere, and was very unpleasant. I just reverted back to V9.2, which worked perfectly.

      Summary

It is common to expect that dealing with big corporations will be unpleasant and unproductive. Vuescan is developed by one or two people. However, dealing with Ed Hamrick has been the most unpleasant and unproductive "support" experience I have ever experienced, to the extent that he has explicitly said that he does not read email messages!

      Final summary: Avoid!

"Hamrick needs to hire a customer care professional"

      September 01, 2013   |   By gmatt3

      Version: VueScan 9.2.23

      Pros

For almost what it costs to purchase a brand new scanner (with it's own custom software) you can buy this one size fits all "solution"?

      Cons

Abysmal customer support- by the author himself! I see another review citing rude customer support. I can only echo this sentiment.

      Summary

Yes, it works but why bother?

      "I think it is great."

      August 14, 2013   |   By jtarheel

      Version: VueScan 9.2.22

      Pros

Easy to use and straight forward. Does a lot. Scanning pics, slides (if your scanner supports that), and OCR built it.

      Cons

So much in it that it may take you some time to learn it all.

      Summary

I use it a lot with scanning photos and making use of the OCR. I haven't used the negative adaptor on the new scanner, as yet.

My only problem with scanning in books (lately) is that Vuescan may be slowing down after a long session. Closing it out and starting over, that seems to correct it.

Also, I had an old Scanjet IIcx that I used with my old Amiga, which the scanner worked off the SCSI port. Then went to Macs, again using the SCSI port. After a while, I thought the scanner was kaput when Apple only had USB and Firewire, but with a SCSI card, the scanner was still of use. Along the way, HP stopped supporting the Scanjet IIcx, that is when I looked into Vuescan. THEN came the the time where the SCSI card would not work in the next new Mac. I was stuck, till I was led to FR1sx (Firewire SCSI adaptor). That lasted a long time. Then trouble with the Firewire buss, so bought a Canon Lidi 700F. Scans a lot faster than the old Scanjet, and Vuescan is still used since it was easier to use than learning new software. At 63, learning new stuff is getting harder to do.

"Rude customer service. Works decently with my scanner"

      August 07, 2013   |   By lulu4444

      Version: VueScan 9.2.22

      Pros

      It scans documents.

      Cons

Customer service and my scanner does not work up to par.

      Summary

I have a Xerox Documate 252 with windows 8. With other versions of Windows and my scanner software, this scanner rocks. Fast as ever. With Vuescan it never scans correct the first time. I have to use it in default mode, scan the switch the setting around. Otherwise the program freezes. Discussed it with the guy a bit and I can't believe how rude he is. I wouldn't give him my business ever again even if I have a to buy a new scanner. With Vuescan I can at least scan documents, but not without getting past some issues first. Also scans a whole lot slower.

      "Buyer Beware"

      May 26, 2012   |   By dawsonart

      Version: VueScan 9.0.95

      Pros

VueScan does work, but we had some real problems.

      Cons

Bought a new computer with Windows 7 Professional to run older programs on the virtual machine with XP mode. I have HP Scanjet 5370C scanner which wouldn't work. Read about VueScan, tried the trial version, it worked, and it seemed to be a good solution until I tried to use the XP mode. Nothing would come up. We tried many solutions, including uninstalling VueScan and XP mode. Once XP mode was uninstalled we couldn't reinstall it. It wouldn't complete the set up. The solution we found was:
First uninstalled VueScan. I disconnected the scanner.
Next uninstalled XP mode, then Windows Virtual Machine, not that easy. It isn't where the programs are located like XP mode is, Go to control panel, to uninstall programs, to view installed updates to find the virtual machine.
Once these are ALL uninstalled, go through the reinstall process from the Windows site to reinstall Xp mode and the virtual machine.

      Summary

Once this was ALL done the XP mode would finish the setup process and our computer was finally back to normal, but without VueScan.Otherwise, not only doesn't XP mode complete its setup, but the computer will not shut down because, I guess, it keeps trying to complete the setup. It was a real headache.I would suggest that if you have XP mode and still want to give VueScan a try, and who knows it might work OK for you, that you try the trial version and be sure that the XP mode still works before paying for it. The guy who runs it WILL NOT give a refund, and never answered any of our E-Mails. Someone else wrote worst customer service, as far as I could tell there is no customer service. The attitude is, I think, that VueScan works and if it wipes out a large part of your computer function, that tough, it's not his problem.
It's really too bad. I liked the way it worked, but I can buy a new scanner, but I can't replace the XP mode on my computer, which I needed a lot more than my scanner.

      "buyer beware"

      May 09, 2012   |   By happy2today

      Version: VueScan 9.0.93

      Pros

      The app works as advertised

      Cons

Purchasing the one year upgrade version produced an invalid license on the one year mark.
Customer service stinks -- actually ridiculed me when I asked for the version back that I purchased.

      Summary

The app itself might be good but if you only buy the version that allows a one year upgrade, on the one year mark, the app doesn't accept your license any more. I contacted support and just got ridiculed -- very unprofessional and unacceptable. All I want is the version I purchased. I had no idea I was purchasing a one year only license - thought I could use my purchased version forever. Wake up folks your customer support can and will kill a good product.
