An iTunes alternative, Vox provides you with greater control over music playback.

Pros

Broad file compatibility: Vox for Mac plays more file formats than iTunes, including FLAC, a smaller file that doesn't compromise on quality.

Good startup: Vox has an excellent startup process, where it walks you through a few features of the app. For instance, you can choose to have Vox play only files that aren't supported by iTunes, or you can choose to have it play all file types instead.

Equalizer controls: This is a feature that many music lovers will really enjoy. Vox allows you to access a graphic equalizer panel where you can fine-tune the sound quality that you're getting from the player. This becomes especially important for people who use external, high-quality speakers and want to get the best quality sound. Vox's equalizer is easy to fine-tune and control and comes with a lot of useful presets.

Cons

Slightly confusing interface: The Vox interface is a little confusing beyond the basic play controls. The buttons aren't labeled, and it is not immediately clear what does what. It takes a little fumbling around to get used to.

Bottom Line

If you're looking for a better music player, or for one that plays file types beyond what iTunes can handle, Vox is a great choice. It works well and gives you the fine-tuned control over playback that iTunes lacks.

"Simple music player that improves sound quality."

March 07, 2015  |  By Marc Clark--2008

 |  Version: Vox 2.4.1

Pros

Seemingly warmer tones from your music over iTunes.
Easy, unobtrusive interface.

Cons

A minor complaint but a big one for me. Organizing albums in "record store" fashion is not possible as far as I can tell. You know, Rolling Stones listed alphabetically under "r"; Rod Stewart listed under "S". I'm old, I admit it. But, dagnabbit! that's how I'm used to finding my albums.

Summary

Solid but lightweight app that brings somewhat richer tones to your speakers no matter their size. I recommend.

"Horrible, crashes constantly"

December 19, 2014

 |  Version: VOX 2.4

Pros

None. The program crashed before I could even get a chance to assess its pros.

Cons

Crashes when launched. Then relaunches automatically, only to crash again.

"Dire, wrong way! Do NOT update!!!"

February 20, 2014  |  By maggeee

 |  Version: VOX 2.0

Pros

plays FLAC files still

Cons

good design replaced with bad
no album artwork box
buttons moved
incomprehensible buttons
items hidden or gone
increased footprint (in screen space & resource intensity)
Buggy
crashes
cpu/resource heavy

Summary

Dire, DO NOT UPDATE!!! Thank God I had the old version in backup. I don't know if this is a result of a buyout by competition or similar schema, but the new version is misery incarnate in comparison with the previous. Initially, I noticed the album cover-art picture has gone (geez!) and then balked at the cheap, webby-addy-look and almost aggressive new graphic design that destroys the neat, 'just-right' and uncomplicated design (being minimal yet retaining a friendly character) that had been developed through past versions up until the previous.

Now it is also slower, buggy and crashing. I primarily started using Vox as a 'light-weight' alternative player and to play FLAC files, so if they make it as CPU intensive and flappy as the others I simply will not continue to use it.

Doh!

Has binaural option included.

Lot of network and CPU load than previous versions.
Slow response compared to other players like Amarra or foobar (under wine for mac)

"This version works great on OSX 10.6.8"

August 14, 2012  |  By scottf--2008

 |  Version: Vox 0.3 beta 1

Pros

Great quality music player.

Cons

No Cons for this version. I am running OSX 10.6.8 and the Beta 3 version would not run.

Summary

Stay with this Version 2.8 beta 2, which is stable and works efficiently.

October 15, 2011  |  By Jerroldtidwell

 |  Version: Vox 0.2.8 beta 2

Pros

Nice equalizer, and very decent control of sound.

Cons

Summary

It is a nice idea, but I have PLENTY of computer to support this app...I7 Quad, with 8 gigs of ram....the app is just not solid.

"The best player for Mac"

January 19, 2011  |  By moonfiremusic

 |  Version: Vox 0.2.8 beta 2

Pros

Native Mac interface, plays a great variety of files, simple and lightweight.

Cons

None really.

Summary

It's a great alternative to the bloated iTunes (which won't even play files like FLAC).

"Good sound, no good playlist"

October 12, 2010  |  By thinbass

 |  Version: Vox 0.2.7

Pros

1. Godd sound quality
2. Quite few sound controls, even some effects (have no use for them though)
3. bpm counter,

Cons

1. Layout of the windows (would prefere all tools in one window rather than clicking between them)
2. can't work with playlist (that is something almost anoying)

Summary

I was looking for some music player which could replace iTunes as the sound quality of the original Apple music software is VERY... poor. But I like the way iTunes orginise music library (arrange by genre, album, composer, artist etc.), so I would prefere something which could use or even better continue with Music Library as it is now. Unfortunately the only alternative which could do that was so expensive (i mean EXPENSIVE), so I've instaled Vox and am pretty satisfied with it. I'm still using the iTunes for organising my tunes though. Yes, it's pain in the bum, but what can I do?

"Very cool yet underrated audio player."

August 31, 2010  |  By The_Defenestrator

 |  Version: Vox 0.2.7

Pros

Versatile audio player and converter. Hand for musicians, in that you can easily change pitch of a song and keep the same tempo, or slow a song down without affecting the pitch. You can export the changes in various formats.

Cons

So far, no complaints. It does have some features that are cool but I'll rarely use, like adding reverb, distortion, phaser, or flanger.

Summary

To repeat: cool and versatile audio player that can make various changes to files (even youtube downloads) which can then be exported in many popular formats. It has a very intuitive, easy to use interface. It does a lot of things for free that other products may charge for.
