Advances in back-up awareness and technology have made career-ending crashes much less of a worry, but rescue from them isn't cheap. For significantly less than what some recovery specialists charge, VirtualLab offers you a chance to drag your data back from the grave.
The app starts up with a helpful intro screen showing you its recovery modules: PC or Mac Partition, Deleted Files, E-mail, Photo and CD/DVD ROM. Clicking on one of those takes you to a screen with tabs for those recovery modules on the left, making it easy to switch between them. The control panel for each module is on the right, and the options change appropriately from Recover to Save as you progress through the recovery process. The lack of toolbar buttons on the top of the app makes it easy to see your files in a clear and uncluttered way.
In our tests, we were unable to test the app against data loss because we hadn't lost any data. However, we did recover files that we had deleted several weeks ago. The number of files presented to us was enormous, and VirtualLab could benefit by some advanced search routines to help identify specific files to resurrect. Still, this is a powerful recovery application and worth trying for anybody who has lost their life's work and doesn't have thousands of dollars to spend on getting it back.

Pros
I had a case where a Compaq NeoServer running SCO OpenServer 5 had crashed. Oddly, when I tried to use another boot server running OpenServer 6, it knew what the drives were, but couldn't mount it. I purchased Virtual Lab Data Recovery and allowed it to do a sector scan.

Virtual Lab Data Recovery has found the files missing and restored them with no hassle! The product is simple to use, needs no help or "how to" guides, and is less expensive than sending my computer in service, waiting a couple of days or a week and paying a couple of hundred dollars.

Summary
I just wanted to write you with a giant THANKS! I was quite frustrated that a random glitch in either my Kodak camera or in my external hard drive had made the pictures unavailable. Virtual Lab Data Recovery started to "intensively" work its way though the damaged hard drive (I had been unable to access it all in any way before) I breathed a BIG sigh of relief - it recovered 113 photos.

I am still using Virtual Lab Data Recovery after I tried to recover a 1tb hdd that mysteriously blacked out and got all the data back in less than one day. I had the hdd attached to my laptop and out of the blue, it crashed.

Summary
After a power outage our second hard drive which we used for storage was no longer recognized by Windows - no files, no folders, no pictures, no music, nothing. Since I was out of town, my wife decided to format the drive to see if it could still be used. Then she copied some of our photos off of a CD onto the drive to prove it would work and left the rest up to me when I got home. Having little hope, I started VirtualLab Data Recovery and went to bed while it began scanning our 640GB drive. Next morning it showed a huge list of recoverable files. I told it to recover them (to our main Windows C: drive in My Documents). Later we went through the recovered files. As far as we could tell everything was there except for two photos - yes, just two! - and one garbled music track. In addition, it recovered some photos and documents we had deleted over six months before.

VirtualLab Data Recovery successfully recover nearly 500Gb of photos and movies from my crashed 1TB 2x RAID drive and move them to a new drive. Nothing was too much trouble and the steps are very easy to follow.
