The well-regarded Vipre antivirus software comes in different versions for home and business users. We recently tried Vipre Antivirus 2012, which is optimized for home users. In addition to the fast and thorough Vipre antivirus engine, this shareware package includes antirootkit and antispyware capabilities, email protection, removable media scanning, and real-time active protection from emerging threats. It works well with other antivirus solutions installed, too, and supports SSL and TLS with Outlook and Outlook Express. Vipre Antivirus 2012 is free to try for 30 days.

Vipre sets up quickly and easily for an antivirus tool. Scanning your system is always the first step in antivirus protection, but we clicked Update first to get the latest virus definitions. Of course, Vipre checks for updates automatically, too. Three scan settings are available: Quick Scan, Deep Scan, and a targeted Custom Scan. You should always use a full scan as a baseline when setting up a new antivirus solution, so we selected Deep Scan and pressed Scan Now. The scan is quite thorough and takes as long as other full antivirus scans, or longer, but we wanted it deep, not fast. (The everyday Quick Scan is much speedier.) Vipre takes the cautious approach to potential threats, automatically quarantining files it deems a threat, though of course there's an Always Allowed list and other configuration options. Vipre's Deep Scan isolated some adware that wasn't dangerous but wasn't exactly welcome, either, and we were delighted to give it the heave-ho. Vipre includes some useful extra modules: a Secure File Eraser, a History Cleaner, and PC Explorer, which identifies specific files and processes that may be suspicious. You can add safe items to the Always Allowed list from PC Explorer.

With so many competent antivirus tools available as freeware, why pay for Vipre Antivirus 2012? Well, if there's any program worth paying for to get better performance or features, it's your security software, especially your antivirus solution. Things like built-in extras and advanced technical support make a difference. Users' needs vary, but Vipre's 30-day trial lets you see for yourself if it's the antivirus solution you need.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Vipre Antivirus 2012 5.0.

"Super Fast!"

September 20, 2011  |  By saltydawgz

 |  Version: Vipre Antivirus 4.0.4194

Pros

I was able to run a deep scan with VIPRE and didn't even notice it running, no performance hit at all! VIPRE found many things McAfee had missed and it's so much faster. I've been using VIPRE for about 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it!

Cons

It's not free

Summary

The fastest and most effective antivirus I have ever used.

"We are a Vipre Reseller, and DO NOT recommend it!!!"

September 11, 2011  |  By ckleavitt

 |  Version: Vipre Antivirus 4.0.4194

Pros

System Speed is not significantly reduced during on-demand scan; US based support.

Cons

The Vipre software is NOT effective in catching real time threats in my extensive experience, and has proven itself over and over again to be unreliable. The product has been an embarrassment to our product line.

Summary

I have noticed that several of the top freeware AV programs outperform Vipre in threat detection. Vipre is terrible at handling spyware and adware threats, and users should be weary of trusting it. We have been a reseller for a couple years, and will no longer offer this product going forward. GFI (new owner of Vipre) has many other products that are worth checking out. However, their Vipre product is in my opinion sub-par and lacks the protection that is needed in the current threat environment.

"Not happy with this product what else do you want"

August 26, 2011  |  By spyguyjim007

 |  Version: Vipre Antivirus 4.0.4194

Pros

?????????????????????

Cons

Not protecting attacks well

Summary

This software seems to be good at cleaning up messes, but does a poor job of preventing them! Still getting trojans and malware despite claims of developer. I would not spend any money on this product. We bought a 10-computer anniversay special deal and I doubt it will ever be installed on any more machines. What a waste of $99.

"Failed to ID Adobe Updater Trojan"

July 26, 2011  |  By StaceyPZ

 |  Version: Vipre Antivirus 4.0.4194

Pros

secure file eraser
easy to use, easy to schedule

Cons

Disappointing: the one time I needed it, it failed. Tech support, while friendly, lacked urgency. Seemed to think if Vipre did not catch the virus, there must not be one. WRONG. Free MSE service did a better job of finding and eliminating threats.

Summary

The virus started as an invitation from what looked like Adobe to download updates. Unfortunately, it was not Adobe, but malware. Sad when a complete novice like me can resolve a malicious trojan issue myself while waiting around for a well-known, and well-respected company like GFI/Vipre to come through. Issue was reported to Vipre 5:28pm CST 7/25/11. Solutions were attempted with tech support but no virus was detected. At 7:16pm I phoned tech support again and was instructed to download and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It returned nothing. at 7:37a.m. 7/26/11, I phoned tech support to report solution failed and was told my issue would be passed up the line, I asked for a call back and was told they would call me. No call, but I did get an email at 12:52pm suggesting I download and run http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe to "Unhide icons" - what? still no solution about the VIRUS. In the meantime, while waiting for Vipre to resolve, I found and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials (free). MSE quickly found and killed the following which were missed altogether by my paid Vipre.
Exploit:Java/ByteVerify.D
Exploit:Java/ByteVerify.RP
Trojan:Java/Agent.B
Exploit:Java/ByteVerify.E

GFI "escalated" my issue only after my posting that this was unacceptable: http://supportforums.sunbeltsoftware.com/messageview.aspx?catid=76&threadid=8266&enterthread=y

Excuses were made and "new and emerging threats" were mentioned, but this virus can be found in various forms since 2008, though I suppose, to be fair, it can evolve. How free software solutions can identify and resolve them, but my three year subscription cannot is disappointing.

Other info I easily found on my own about this and similar infections with a few simple Google searches returned the following results:
search for: Adobe Updater Virus or adobeupdater.exe virus

"New Product/Company - Has a Long Way to Go"

July 10, 2011  |  By mystical pippin

 |  Version: Vipre Antivirus 4.0.4194

Pros

Installs quick - low ram usage but the pros end there

Cons

changes browser settings, redirects links in emails, no SSL encryption protocols for email, poor customer support

Summary

I bought this software because it had a good rating in PC Magazine plus very low RAM usage. First thing I noticed was it changed my browser settings - not only to block all pop ups. but if you have sites that you frequent and use the "keep me logged in" button it logs you out everytime. I kept resetting them to stay logged in but it didn't matter VIPRE forced a log off everytime. Next it redirected certain email links I clicked on sending me to a search page with the link showing up in the search box. When I wrote to VIPRE they sent back the standard - "clear your cookies" instructions which I did but it didn't work. I wrote to them again and they had me do another set of instructions which also didn't work. I had to run a different AV product to clean out all the cookies as well. Then I realized I could no longer attach anything to my emails. I continued to write to them for support for all these issues also I wanted to tell tell them I figured out how to stop the redirecting by turning off the web filter - when all of a suddent I got an automated email from them telling me the address was not monitored and therefore good! I went back and looked at all the emails I had sent previously and the ones they had sent me - it was the exact same email I had used. I went to their site and filled out a new ticket. This caused them to become confused so I had to start alll over again to explain what was happening. Then I found out from looking at the site that they do't support SSL encryption for any email client except Thunderbird so all of your emails are unprotected & open for anyone to see.. At that point I was fed up so I cancelled service and got a refund. The people there do not know what they are doing. They have a wacky set up with support - sometimes they answer you but most of the time they make you go to a different site to fill out a ticket and you just go round/round with them having to explain everything over and over as if its the first time yo're requesting help. RIDICULOUS.
