I am an IT pro and have my network set up with more than enough rules to allow this program out. The problem doesn't lie with anyone's network. It has to do with this thing being a poorly coded piece of garbage. Do yourself a favor and don't bother!
Cons
The whole thing is a con. If you read what you get for using it for free... They'll use your essay after a bit.
Summary
Don't bother downloading. It doesn't work. I spent hours trying to make it work. The customer support is a joke, and the comments over there are good for a hoot.
Received this email... Looks like they try to hide problems and hush-hush them. My advice... Avoid this company.

There are certainly a small number of users on facebook who have
reported problems. There are also 4,000+ users who scan their essays
each day without any problems. The users experiencing problems are a
very small number in comparison and we are usually able to help them -
most of the common problems are addressed on our 'contact' page on our
website.
As I said, thanks for your feedback but really I think your comments
could have been more constructive.
