Viki compiles a collection of television shows -- mostly live action, but some animated -- from Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and other overseas countries with English subtitles. With deep social integration, a huge range of shows to choose from, and fan subtitling that results in new episodes sometimes as quickly as 24-hours after they air in their home country, Viki is a very well-made app and a must-have for fans of these shows.
When you set up Viki, you'll need to create an account or you can opt to connect the app with Facebook right away and start sharing your preferences with (or getting recommendations from) your friends. Because much of the community here is fan- operated and supported, it is one of those instances in which social media integration makes sense and enhances the experience. After signing up, you can start watching shows right away. Browse or search for new shows, and then choose your favorite episodes to watch. You can "Like" the video, share it with friends, or share it on Facebook or Twitter. The diversity of videos is pretty wide here, with many television programs and a handful of movies and short videos, all subtitled in English.
If you are a fan of cinema or television from countries like South Korea or Japan, the collection of options, community-building tools, and social integration in Viki make it a must-have app for you. While video playback can be a bit choppy at times (the app is free after all), the overall impression is very good.
