Editors' Review

NCH Software's VideoPad Video Editor Professional is a full-featured video-editing tool that is surprisingly easy to use. It can combine numerous clips and soundtracks in a wide range of video formats into movie projects, or build an entire production out of a single clip. It supports drag-and-drop editing, real-time effects previews, format conversion, importing and exporting files, captions, narration, and more. It can burn DVDs, HDs, and Blu-ray discs and output video to portable devices. It can also capture video from camcorders and other devices.

It's a rare video editor that you can just fire up and start making movies with, but that's what we did with VideoPad Pro. We browsed to a cartoon saved as an MPG file. VideoPad Pro scanned it and displayed it in the left half of the split main view, with its frames running sequentially along the bottom of a main preview window in a scrollable, time-marked view, and also displayed its information in the left-hand Media List panel. Pressing the Play button played the clip normally. Extracting clips from the main clip was incredibly simple; using the timeline, we selected an In Point and an Out Point and clicked the green down arrow. VideoPad extracted the clip and displayed it below in the Video Track section, which is just above the similar Audio Track. In this manner, we quickly cut up and rearranged the cartoon out of sequence, and then previewed it in the right-hand pane. The transitions between merged clips were seamless. We could save our finished clip or subject it to a wide range of processing and production tools. Toolbar icons let us quickly insert blank spaces or add narration, captions, and other effects. Clicking Build Movie called up a dialog that let us select the video format and whether to burn a disc, send it to a portable device, upload it to YouTube, and other choices.

With smartphones, video sharing sites, and Webcams everywhere, there's no lack of raw video resources, just a need for a powerful, easy-to-use tool like VideoPad Video Editor Professional to put your projects together, polish them up, and present them in the format of your choice. More than just fast and competent, though, we also found it fun to use.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of VideoPad Video Editor Professional 2.2.0. The trial version is limited to 14 days.

"Updating is a rip-off"

December 17, 2013  |  By tjlee500

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

It is a good program but updating is expensive and unfair

Cons

Update Policy

Summary

I bought the program 3 months ago and decided to take the UPDATE option from the open program. No warning that this would deregister my copy. It updated and became an unregistered copy. I contacted support and registration is linked to the DATE you bought program. I learned I would have to pay an update fee which was almost the cost of the original program. I finally got support to send me link to older program so I could use my purchase reg. key.

Most programs allow you to update for free or at least tell you update will cost so much. Not NCH software. Buyer Beware! I will search for a program that has a reasonable update policy. Just went to Windows 8.1 for FREE!

Pros

None, it opened but it didn't run.

Cons

"Horrible Malware"

December 14, 2013  |  By Randome_User

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

None! This is absolute trash!

Cons

I tried the trial. After the trial ended, the software hijacked my browser to go to the publisher's website! I couldn't change my homepage back! Additionally, I constantly automatically opened webpages, which is extremely annoying! I won't recommend it to ANYONE! You should do a better job of evaluating your software, CNET! Please!

Summary

Trash. Junk. Malware.

"Malware - Browser Hijack"

November 20, 2013  |  By oldgeek59

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

Nice editing software and easy to use.

Cons

After 14 day trial period, if you do not pay for the professional version, software hijacks your browser. It keeps redirecting internet explorer to the NCS website and will not let you close the browser. As soon as you close the NCH website, 4 more browser windows open - all NCH related.

Summary

Why a company that can produce good video editing software would hijack your browser and load malware on your computer is beyond me. I would never buy this software and highly advise that if you install this software, do a backup. A system restore will be necessary to get internet exploere working after this sofware hijacks your browser.

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

Downloading the software didn't result in getting herpes.

Cons

I would have rather have contracted herpes.

Summary

The software hijacked my computer, I told them this, they responded that becuase I agreed to the user agreement they were within their rights to doing that and pretty much told me touch cookies. I asked for a refund and never heard back, it's been a month and a half.

"Last version is as bad as Windows 8 (Crashes every time"

November 10, 2013

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

It's still a good editor, but for short movies.

Cons

* Doesn't work for stop motion movies for more than 1,000 pictures.
* Cannot combined two AVIs file (each of 200 MB)
* For stop motion, If one format in different than the rest, it crashes when creating the video.
* The FULL window preview doesn't produce sound for stop motion after adding narration, even though in the small right screen you can see & hear properly.
* Transitions used to be easier in the top left panel, now it's a drop down menu & you have to memorize all the transitions.

Summary

* They did a POOR JOB trying to match other Windows 8 apps, Looks nice but it crashes all the time

"Dont download it"

October 18, 2013  |  By Ravnen4me

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

I installed the application but did not even use it before I intended to uninstall it.

Cons

After installation, I noticed that the start page has been changed, and an additional tool has been installed named PC Performer on my totally newly installed Win7 HDD. Did not expect a lot of mailtools etc to be installed and will NEVER use CNET again as I have to reinstall Win7 on the HDD.

Summary

I am an IT Manager in one of the top 3 IT companies in the world and even registrered for a CNET account to write this very negative review. Never tried the sw, as strugling with uninstall the sw or installation of win7.

"Disappointed old familiar version incompatible Win 8"

October 05, 2013  |  By jkingo

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

Haven't noticed any. Can't get it to work

Cons

Not intuitive like Win 7 version.

Summary

I used Video Pad for years after a mild learning curve. So far this new version deviates substantially. It says you can drag and drop; I've tried unsuccessfully. Okay, I can open a file from its folder; but the simple interface that made the Win 7 version so good and easy works differently. It keeps denying saying No Clip Selected when I attempt to edit things out between flags. Totally a mess if you're used to the previous program. If it ain't broke...
Might as well try a different program if you have to re-learn it. And from above reviews, no way would I trust their "customer service" if buying the pro version possibly solved these issues, or provided Help.

"Purchased software does not open and run"

September 25, 2013  |  By Photo-tom

 |  Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.14

Pros

None, I purchased the software and downloaded it to my computer. After opening the software I opened a video clip, it starts to process, then VideoPad closes and their website opens in the internet explorer. You go to support and they want you to purchase a support plan. Be very afraid of any company that has software that does not work then they try to charge you to get it running. In their support page it says you can send an email, but they have to complete all of their paid for service first.

Cons

The software doesn't work. You have to pay for email support, biggest mistake I made in a long time. I actually expected the software to actually open a video file right after installation which went without an error. CNET needs to stop promoting reviewing software that has little to no support, very disappointed in CNET. Have used CNET in past, this software was rated 4 stars and has little to no support.

Summary

Do not buy this software or any other products from this company. This is a case of taking advantage of people. This is a scam, pay for software and the software doesn't even work...oh but you can pay for limited email support to fix the most basic function of their software...opening it.
