Using the IPsec protocol - which is standard on many other platforms (e.g. with FreeS/WAN on Linux, PGPnet, SonicWALL, Check Point VPN-1 and others) - transferring data, chatting and any other network traffic will get encrypted with industry-standard algorithms.
