Editors' review

VOX for Mac is an excellent audio player that supports multiple audio formats, including lossless and others not supported by iTunes.

VOX for Mac installs directly from the App Store into the Application folder on your Mac. It features a discrete player window through which you can easily open audio files for playback. Once the audio starts playing, album artwork and other track information is displayed in the player screen, provided, of course, that your files are properly tagged. You can add multiple audio tracks simultaneously by dragging and dropping them into the interface. Playlists can be viewed, edited, and saved through the main app screen. Playback quality is excellent and can be extensively customized by adjusting the players' native EQ settings. The app supports different output devices, including internal speakers, sound system speakers, or Apple TV via Wi-Fi.

With its many features and flawless playback, VOX for Mac is one of the best free solutions for lossless audio playback available on Mac. It won't replace iTunes, but it can enhance it. The application is free, AirPlay-enabled and will be useful to any Mac user needing a high-quality audio player with a large format support.

"Dire, wrong way! Do NOT update!!!"

    February 20, 2014   |   By maggeee

    Version: VOX 2.0

    Pros

    plays FLAC files still

    Cons

    good design replaced with bad
    no album artwork box
    buttons moved
    incomprehensible buttons
    items hidden or gone
increased footprint (in screen space & resource intensity)
    Buggy
    crashes
    cpu/resource heavy

    Summary

Dire, DO NOT UPDATE!!! Thank God I had the old version in backup. I don't know if this is a result of a buyout by competition or similar schema, but the new version is misery incarnate in comparison with the previous. Initially, I noticed the album cover-art picture has gone (geez!) and then balked at the cheap, webby-addy-look and almost aggressive new graphic design that destroys the neat, 'just-right' and uncomplicated design (being minimal yet retaining a friendly character) that had been developed through past versions up until the previous.

Now it is also slower, buggy and crashing. I primarily started using Vox as a 'light-weight' alternative player and to play FLAC files, so if they make it as CPU intensive and flappy as the others I simply will not continue to use it.

    Doh!

"Why this great app become so bad?"

    November 28, 2013   |   By jorgedsan

    Version: VOX 1.2

    Pros

    Great and simple GUI.
Load automatically all supported files in folder.
    Has binaural option included.

    Cons

No AU plugins in the new version
Lot of network and CPU load than previous versions.
Slow response compared to other players like Amarra or foobar (under wine for mac)

"This version works great on OSX 10.6.8"

    August 14, 2012   |   By scottf--2008

    Version: Vox 0.3 beta 1

    Pros

    Great quality music player.

    Cons

No Cons for this version. I am running OSX 10.6.8 and the Beta 3 version would not run.

    Summary

Stay with this Version 2.8 beta 2, which is stable and works efficiently.

"Would be nice if it didn't regularly freeze"

    October 15, 2011   |   By Jerroldtidwell

    Version: Vox 0.2.8 beta 2

    Pros

Nice equalizer, and very decent control of sound.

    Cons

    App constantly freezes.

    Summary

It is a nice idea, but I have PLENTY of computer to support this app...I7 Quad, with 8 gigs of ram....the app is just not solid.

    "The best player for Mac"

    January 19, 2011   |   By moonfiremusic

    Version: Vox 0.2.8 beta 2

    Pros

Native Mac interface, plays a great variety of files, simple and lightweight.

    Cons

    None really.

    Summary

It's a great alternative to the bloated iTunes (which won't even play files like FLAC).

    "Good sound, no good playlist"

    October 12, 2010   |   By thinbass

    Version: Vox 0.2.7

    Pros

    1. Godd sound quality
    2. Quite few sound controls, even some effects (have no use for them though)
    3. bpm counter,

    Cons

    1. Layout of the windows (would prefere all tools in one window rather than clicking between them)
    2. can't work with playlist (that is something almost anoying)

    Summary

I was looking for some music player which could replace iTunes as the sound quality of the original Apple music software is VERY... poor. But I like the way iTunes orginise music library (arrange by genre, album, composer, artist etc.), so I would prefere something which could use or even better continue with Music Library as it is now. Unfortunately the only alternative which could do that was so expensive (i mean EXPENSIVE), so I've instaled Vox and am pretty satisfied with it. I'm still using the iTunes for organising my tunes though. Yes, it's pain in the bum, but what can I do?

"Very cool yet underrated audio player."

    August 31, 2010   |   By The_Defenestrator

    Version: Vox 0.2.7

    Pros

Versatile audio player and converter. Hand for musicians, in that you can easily change pitch of a song and keep the same tempo, or slow a song down without affecting the pitch. You can export the changes in various formats.

    Cons

So far, no complaints. It does have some features that are cool but I'll rarely use, like adding reverb, distortion, phaser, or flanger.

    Summary

To repeat: cool and versatile audio player that can make various changes to files (even youtube downloads) which can then be exported in many popular formats. It has a very intuitive, easy to use interface. It does a lot of things for free that other products may charge for.

    "Unquestionably the BEST audio player/converter/etc..."

    April 04, 2010   |   By Kudrabar

    Version: Vox 0.2.7

    Summary

    ...
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It does everything! It has a million features that surprisingly do not get in each others' way, but they all work great. And scrobbling to boot! Really, nothing can touch Vox. It even outperforms XLD in converting files from say .flac to AAC (or whatever), and that's no small feat.

    And it's FREEEEEE !

    "Freedom from iTunes Library"

    March 21, 2010   |   By arthur_niederfringer

    Version: Vox 0.2.7 RC3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Vox gives the freedom to review your audio without each play adding to a music library. I've been using Vox since 0.25 and it's well worth my donation.
