Version: VLC media player 0.8.6b
"plays everything including partial files"
Pros: Plays all video formats (except for real and wm) - great if you download video from the internet. Can even play files that are imcomplete!
Cons: GUI a bit confusing. If it would handle real and wm i could throw out those two

"An all-round top video/dvd player. Plays stuff almost nothing else will."
Pros: VLC is a crisp no nonsense player that's so simple to use. And it's got a very colourful, pleasing easy to recognise icon which I find very handy considering the battalion of icons we all collect these days. I also like it because the program itself doesn't claim a huge amount of real estate (if you don't want to blow it up to full screen). When I'm only using 1 computer to amuse myself on, I like to play a video and play cards or surf the net at the same time. I hate Real because it takes up a lot of space with its toolbar (&WM as well). If I use one of the other players though I'll watch something on my desktop pc or imac and surf/play or whatever on my laptop or macbook. Yes, I'm spoiled for choice at present but that's because I'm in the process of changing over to MAC and nuking all my PC/microsoft stuff
Cons: Some of the jargon in the advanced configuration is obscure. But that's not something the majority of users would need to get into anyway so it's a really minor beef.
