    "VChat - 1.1a1 Universal Binary"

    April 14, 2006  |   By airstation

    Version: VChat 1.1a1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
VChat - 1.1a1 Universal Binary is a must have app for those with the new Macs with the built-in iSight camera.

An updated CuSeeMe client that allows video/audio conferencing
with groups of users via a simultaneous connection to a Refector site.

The app is very stable and a user-friendly guide is located at: http://www.daffi.org/vchat.htm

    Enjoy!!!

Every edition keeps getting better and better. More stable now than ever. Brings back memories of the old CU days. Keep it coming. Alpha, Beta, or gold, this program rocks! Is there an autodialer plugin coming soon?
    Thanks

"Works great with iSight and DV!"

    December 23, 2003  |   By WolfNaegeli

    Version: VChat 1.0a29

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I bought an iSight camera when it was announced, but I was taken aback when I discovered that it would only work if I had a .Mac or AOL account. It was gathering dust, until I discovered VChat on VersionTracker.

We're now trying out VChat between two Macs on a Local Area Network with an iSight camera at one end and a Canon Optura DV camera on the other end. From the announcement and documentation, it was not clear whether that would work. They talked only about USB and didn't mention FireWire cameras.

It took us a little while to figure out that we had to uncheck the "Fix IP Address Mismatches" option in the Preferences window, as VChat would either disconnect or crash, regardless whether we clicked "Cancel" or "Correct" when the Mismatch window came up. But with that option disabled, it's working like a charm.

For an Alpha release, VChat is surprisingly stable and polished! Better than many commercial products. VChat offers a rich user interface with many options for tweaking performance, but most users will need to make few or no changes to the default settings for basic operation, and it's very easy to use once configured properly. Support for Rendezvous would make local setup even easier. The present absence of support for Rendezvous and audio may be the only reasons this fine product has not advanced to the Beta release stage, but it is quite functional and very usable in its current implementation.

    Cheers!

    "Good Effort"

    Summary

I haven't used CUSeeMe in ages - partly because there wasn't a Mac OS X client, and partially because I'm behind a NAT. This program handles both nicely.

    "Return Of A Legend"

    August 4, 2003  |   By backwoodsbear

    Version: VChat 1.0a20

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is great to have CU under X. We've come a long way since early CU betas on the Mac at Cornell U way back in the Quadra A/V era in the early 90's! Basic functionality of VChat working well. But the bane of ALL videoconferencing apps to date is TEDIOUS window management. Constant shuffle, click and fiddle to deal with what's going on. A whole decade where function forsakes usability and so little real progress has been made on the UI front. The next version of ISPQ for Mac will finally consolidate things into a Single, *TABBED* Window. As Vchat matures, I hope it heads in this direction too. Keep plugging away!
