"Unlocker does the job on XP and Win 7"

    February 16, 2014  |   By zaava1

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

It opens files I've had trouble getting into after reloading my OS.

    Cons

Sometimes says it can't unlock and I have to move and relocate the file before i can open it.

Install tries to load unwanted programs. Need to be careful to keep them from installing.

    Summary

Unlocker is a good program for opening files that refuse to allow XP or Win7 to open them. I use it for opening old files created by old Windows progs.

"Can't survive Mickeysoft for long without it."

    December 16, 2013  |   By FredVanOl

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

    Saves lots of headaches.
    Never a problem.
    Unlocks your desires
    Unlocks your true potential

    Cons

none - absolutely none (10+ chars)

    Summary

This is one the first programs you need to install on a new setup. I find it totally indispensable to unlock files left in a locked state by Mickeysoft crashes, etc.

    "Works, but installs garbage ware"

    December 7, 2013  |   By ln899

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

It does seem to be able to unlock files for deletion, renaming, etc.

    Cons

Even though I clicked the "skip" button, this program installed two additional, unwanted programs that took me 45 minutes to get rid of. I really hate it when software does that. I'd rather pay for it.

    Summary

    Use at your own peril!

    Updated on Dec 7, 2013

I should add that I've been using earlier versions of this program with no problem. This garbage ware problem seems to be recent, which would explain the 4-star rating.

    "does the job."

    November 29, 2013  |   By Jerry995

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

Not only allows unlocking, but lists the task that is causing the lock, so that one can close the offending program and remove the flash drive without forcing an unlock.

    Cons

Some anti-maleware programs flag it as potentially harmful.

    Summary

Much better than just popping the drive out and hoping that nothing got "broken".

"I Used to Love Unlocker; Got Malware from New Install"

    November 19, 2013  |   By Snate

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

Helps you Move and Delete Files when a poorly designed application will not let it go even after it is done with it unless you quit the application.

    Cons

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
I just downloaded the current version of Unlocker for a new computer and it installed Malware on my computer. It installed Tube Dimmer and attempted to install something else as well. I just wasted couple of hours getting my system cleaned up.
    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

    Summary

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Now installs verified Malware on your system. No it is not an error or false positive as it once might have been.
    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

"Helped but didn't work; hard no to install junkware"

    November 2, 2013  |   By mknoll

    Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

    Pros

Identified the process that was preventing deletion of a file, which allowed me to figure out what program to close in order to unlock the file.

    Cons

    1. Failed to unlock the file I was trying to delete.
    2. Default installation process hijacks your browser's default search provider, installs unwanted toolbar, and tries to install other junkware.

    Summary

Windows 7 Home Premium was blocking deletion of an unwanted file, saying "Access is denied" despite the deletion attempt having been made from an Administrator account that was the Owner of the file and had full Permissions for the file.

During the installation process, you have to be VERY diligent and vigilant to avoid installation of junkware. Selecting the default installation options instead of the custom install procedure -- there are not one but two places where you have to make this decision -- will result in the installation of all sorts of nasty-sounding junkware.

Especially deceptive is a series of "Accept" or "Decline" screens. The Accept button -- which installs junkware -- I bright green, which tempts you to click it. The "Decline" button is grayed out, as if clicking it will do nothing. But you need to click Decline to bypass the installation of that screen's particular piece of junkware.

I'm not sure whether I avoided installation of all the junkware.

Just to be safe, I also declined the option to integrate this program as an extension to Windows Explorer. Instead, I ran it from the Start menu.

The program identified multiple processes that it reported were locking the file I wanted to delete. I clicked unlock. The program seems to have thought it had unlocked the file. But Windows still refused to delete the file. Same error message: Access is denied.

Unlocker had reported that all the processes locking the file were Internet Explorer processes. So I closed Internet Explorer. That allowed me to delete the file.

What a simple solution! I wasted about an hour of my time trying to delete one file. At Microsoft's official help site, I entered the search term "'Access is denied' in Windows 7." To my extreme disgust, Microsoft's web site -- as usual -- did not have a solution for this problem -- even though it was a Microsoft error message! The Microsoft page on this error has three frequent causes of this problem, none of which were the cause in my case. The other links on its page took me to lists of articles that had absolutely nothing to do with my problem.
