The search tool built into Windows shows how hard it is to satisfy everyone with one tool: either it's too simple or not simple enough. Ultra File Search is a freeware system search tool from Stegisoft. It can search your system, network, and disks, including CDs, DVDs, and flash drives. It doesn't use background indexing, but it does offer useful search configuration parameters, such as text, date and time, and attributes, and Simple and Wildcard search modes. It can export search results in a variety of formats, including texts, HTML, and XML.
Ultra File Search's small, tabbed interface is fairly typical of search utilities, with a search field, a search path with browser tool, check boxes for selecting various options, and a main list view for results with draggable, customizable column headings. The search tool is tabbed for Files and Folders, Containing Text, Date and Size, and Attributes, an interesting format that allows for excellent specificity in each category while keeping the overall view uncluttered. The program's options involved selecting an export folder and file type as well as enabling context menu integration via check boxes for Computer, Documents, Drives, and Folders, which required a reboot to complete but is well worth the effort. We initiated a variety of searches, specifying search paths via the drop-down directory and the browse function. As with most aftermarket search tools, Ultra File Search can search for and display results in a wide variety of configurations, such as searching hidden subfolders, appending results, excluding file types, case sensitivity, and the ability to search ranges of dates for when files were created, modified, and last accessed. The program also offers highly specific options; for example, under Attributes, we could specify some NTFS-only options, such as compressed, encrypted, and other types of file attributes.
Ultra File Search returned quick, accurate hits for highly targeted searches. If you're looking for a free search tool to use instead of the built-in Windows utility, you could do worse than to give it a try.
