    Version: UltimateDefrag 2008 2.0.0.55

"Great software! c|net reviewer is an idiot (see below)."

    by MTN-Mountain on June 20, 2009

Pros: Unbelievable! Really good software. You'll want to buy this software (I did), so get this 14 day free trial version rather than the totally free version to test it. That will save you uninstalling the free one. Small footprint.

Cons: To get the very best optimization, file placement and HDD speed requires some reading of their PDF instructions. Even a novice user can skip the PDF and get huge improvements in hard disk performance, but the manual is a great HDD primer for novices.

Summary: First, I'm starting to wonder if a competitor of Ultimate Defrag wrote all the other reviews before this one.

Second, there is no other defragger out there that is also optimizing file placement like this software does, nor in the sophisticated way that it does it, so I don't know how one can compare this software to mere defragmenting software.

Now this is nutz! How can the totally free version available at http://download.cnet.com/UltimateDefrag-Freeware-Edition/9241-2094_4-10840833.html?messageID=10447430&tag=mncol have a 4 out of 5 star user rating, and this improved, paid for, 14-day trial version only get 2 out of 5 stars? That makes no sense.

Then, the c|net reviewer for this version seems to totally disagree with the c|net reviewer for the free version. Compare the c|net review on this download page with the one at the web link I provided above and you'll think they were looking at two totally different pieces of software. Sheese!

Then the c|net reviewer here writes: "The program opens with a garishly designed interface that is busy and hard on the eyes. The multiple colors used also make it difficult to navigate."

Idiot. How else can a piece of software have a color-coded legend indicating what the many different types of files on your hard disk are without having a bunch of colors?? Should they have used shades of gray??

Finally the reviewer says, "Aside from the horrid interface design, we were also disappointed with the program's help options. It offers a PDF Help file, but we were unable to access it."

I had no problem opening the PDF file. I wonder if the c|net reviewer is having problems with his Adobe PDF Reader and blaming that on Ultimate Defrag. It's obvious why he's "disappointed with the program's help options," if he can't see the 51 page instruction manual -- which is like a primer for understanding hard disk defragmentation for the novice and written in plain, easy to understand English. This is like an automobile reviewer giving a car a poor review because he didn't have the keys to the door and couldn't get in to drive it.

I've been computing since 1984. I know well what I'm doing with computers and this is GREAT software. I believe I would have to put it in the top 10 of my all time best software list.

Don't be stupid. Don't just defrag your files and hard disk (and other file storage devices like USB cards), but optimize your file placement on them at the same time. Do you want a fast computer or not? If not, go elsewhere.

This software should be on EVERY computer running Windows. I've used Windows own defrag, and many others since before Microsoft introduced their own defrag, which I think was in Windows 98. Before that, I used the PC Tools defragger. None of the others I've used or read about over the years seem to get close to comparing to Ultimate Defrag (as it does a lot more than just defrag files), nor even get close to having it's power and capability.

This software is so good that I bought the $29.xx version -- I got 25% off that by using the link from within the trial version of the software to make the purchase; and also bought a copy for my son's computer, which you can buy at the same time at 50% off.

I'm sure Ultimate Defrag will rank as one of the best computer purchases I've made as the years advance... right up there with adding more RAM to increase performance and speed.

Now, I haven't had to use the company's email support yet that some people here are complaining about here, so I can't address whether those comments are fair or not. If they are as off-base and skewed as the other negative comments here, then I doubt that they are fair. OTOH, why would I need to contact their support. The software worked beautifully and flawlessly right from the start.

I've also had NO, not one, email spam message from the company. If I do start getting any, I'll make sure to stop back here and add a reply to this review so you will know that that part of the others' complaining was actually legitimate. It's been over a week now with no spam, so I doubt I'll start getting some at this point.

With a 14 day free trial, what do you have to lose? Download and try it, and come back here and thank me profusely. :-) Also add your own review so others will be able to learn what they are missing.

Look at all the 35+ reviews of the freeware version of this software at the web site I gave, in the message above, and see if you don't agree that the reviews here don't make any sense compared to the great reviews there.
