"Very Dissappointed with new x4."
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
Very nice interface and easy to use with nice new features. Seems to be stable with HD from my canon 7d. Proxy files are a dream with this and working the timeline is fun.
Cons
The "make movies template manager" for user specific render formats does not work. I have created a template and saved it. Creating another template simply disregards your render settings and keeps defaulting to the 1st one you created.
Summary
If you have x2 pro stick to it or go elsewhere.

"Still the best for my taste and convenience"
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
Ease of use, enough features for most tasks, handy and friendly interface, easy editing and insertion of effects, transitions, etc. Version X4 is faster and more responsive.
Cons
Still doesn't support FLV in spite of claims to the contrary. I wish some slider controls had a numeric input field as well.
Summary
I have used VideoStudio Pro since maybe version 8, when it was still made by Ulead, before Corel acquired it. I don't do anything out of this world, but I like the right balance of features and ease of use that CVS Pro offers - much richer than Windows MovieMaker, but far less complicated to use than the full Adobe Premiere.
I am not going to use most of version X4's new features, and I was pleased to see that old-timers will still find the old familiar interface. But I was pleasantly surprised at the good code optimization that Corel seems to have made this time. Previous versions were getting increasingly heavy and taxing on the CPU and memory without offering any real benefit. Version X4 reversed that trend and is much faster and more responsive. X3 used to have a glitch that made it a work of patience to edit MP4s, for example, as controls stopped responding for long periods and the program became slow almost to a halt. Not any more. Just this optimization is enough to make the switch.
My only disappointment is that I was eager to see if X4 would finally support directly editing FLV (Flash Video) files, the format of most YouTube captures/downloads. In theory, now it does - FLV appears among the supported file types when you open a video file. But when you try to import it, a "file format mismatch" error invariably happens. So, in practice, if you want to edit a FLV file, you still have to perform a conversion to another supported format using some other utility, which entails some quality loss.
But to newbies who are looking for a video editing program, I highly recommend that you have a look at it. You will hear many people saying they tried everything else in the market, but always end returning to CVS Pro. I subscribe to that, and there is a good reason: it's *handy*. It soons get familiar and practical. No other similar product is as productive in the end. Direct competitors would be Adobe Premiere Elements (the trimmed-down version of Premiere), Sony Vegas Pro, ArcSoft and Roxio suites. But I found the two former to have clumsy interfaces and less features, and the two latter both to be limited and to have extremely "dirty" installs, which overload the system with unnecessary codecs, drivers and services that cause stability and performance problems and are extremely difficult to completely uninstall, even with the help of total uninstaller programs.
Corel VideoStudio Pro is among my basic and most used programs, the speed of version X4 was very much welcome, and I can't avoid highly recommending it. -

"Best so far!!"
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
Captures super fast, love the tons of extras for the price!!
Cons
Locks up a few times, but not a big deal.
Summary
Ok, after reading all the horror stories about all the video editing software, I almost gave up. I tried downloading the trial version of all the leading softwares. Pinnacle didn't download properly, and tried to re-install it 3 times and gave up. Sucks. Cust. Svc is even worse. THEN when you go to remov it, it friggin holds you hostage and you have to work at it, and be tricky to get it off, going to your files. Took longer to get off than to download!!
I was reading reviews and most of the people were saying, "I'm going back to my Corel." I really wanted something more expensive, but downloaded it anyway for the hell of it. It captured my 68 High Def videos in record time and I was up and editing so fast compared to the other programs!
I am quite the idiot when it comes to leaning a new program, so had to call cust. svc once. No holding, and they directed me to the right answer.
I FRIGGIN LOVE THIS SOFTWARE!! I am still on the trial version, but have already ordered it because I rocks!! So many features and options, I'll be on social security before I use them all... I have a TV show and they are going to think I hired someone to do my videos now. Sweet!
I wish I had read the review I'm writing now, because it would have saved me two days of reading stupid reviews on all the sites for the best editing software... It was painful.
If anything changes, I'll post it here, but right now I've been editing for two days and LOVE IT!!
I bought it from the manufacturer's website, that actually had it for cheaper than Wally World. Go figure. If you have any ??'s i'm at sleeplessn2009 with yahoo. I'm sure I'll be a pro at it in about a week or so... I just need to read the manual...ugh...I'd rather have a root canal...LOL And don't forget to watch the tons of youtube videos that will help you, too.
Cheers!! Teri -
"Everything I wanted....except......"
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
Great Interface
Cool FX
Great Transitions
Easy to learnCons
When I saved the video and opened it up again it said the video files were MISSING!!!
Summary
I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but this got very, very annoying after the third time. So if you're going to edit a video in one setting....this is the perfect editor for you. If you're not then this isn't the perfect editor for you. So far the only good video editors out there are Sony Vegas Pro, Windows Movie Maker (yes), and probably iMovie but I don't have a MAC so I guess I wouldn't know. Take what you want from this review, if you're like me you probably will discard all the bad reviews about this product you have your heart set on getting.

"A total folly!"
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
none at all
Cons
Free trial from Corel website wouldn't allow me to register product and use it. Hung up when I tried to uninstall it from my computer. Useless product from completely inept company.
Summary
I downloaded the free trial of Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 from Corel's website.
First time I opened X4 I got a product registration screen. Not wanting to register it yet and start getting unwanted emails from Corel, I tried skipping this step. No dice. Then I tried to register the trial version. Entered my email and a password, clicked button to register and got a message that the Corel webpage I was sent to was not longer functioning! I tried registering twice, same thing. So I can't even open this program to try it!
When I attemped to uninstall the program unsing the standard Windows method, it froze mid-uninstall. I had to go through the hassle of using Windows Backup to set my computer back to a date before I'd installed the Corel garbage!
Last year, I had a similarly negative experience trying to install the previous version of VideoStudio, though product screw ups were different. Corel offered no support options of any kind. Corel seems to be a completely inept company. Don't waste your money on their products. -

"X4 is better than X3 and other editing software"
Version: Ulead VideoStudio X4
Pros
Faster startup, download size much smaller than X3, more accessible interface, faster processing, does not make my computer hang unlike in X3
Cons
Some of the audio and video templates packaged with X3 are now absent with X4.
Summary
I've been using X3 quite long ago. I did not know at first that a new version of Corel VideoStudio is now out of the market, so when I learned of it, I immediately upgraded it to X4. I was surprised when I started to use it, because it loads only for 10 seconds (unlike in X3 where it is loading for 20 to 30 seconds). Also, it is very faster in importing of videos and photos than its previous version. It also has faster video processing, and it does not make my laptop hang unlike in X3. [Laptop specs: Intel Core Duo 2, 3GB RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, been used for 3 years already]
However, I noticed that some of the audio and video samples packaged with X3 are now missing in X4. I have to download it manually through their download template packs found in the program. But, I do not consider it as a flaw in the program, since I only use it once in a blue moon.
I can just say that it's a good job for the developers of Corel VideoStudio X4, because their update is always better than its previous version. I will be waiting for X5 soon.
