"Better Solution"

October 25, 2005  |  By WhiteDog

 |  Version: Typeset 3.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Typeset was one of the first type managers available for OS X. However, development has lagged and it now has some superior competition. I wasn't going to say anything, though, until I read in the "description" the claim that "there simply isn't a better solution on the market." This is patently untrue.

Linotype FontExplorer is a more robust font manager - and it's free. Veenix Font Tools has a broader tool set, though it is twice as expensive as Typeset. What I appreciate about Veenix is that the developer is very responsive to user input and quickly implemented two feature requests I made - to indicate the font type (TT, dfont, PS, etc.) inline with the font name (a feature I requested a long time ago for typeset which is still not available) and to color code the font types to make it easy to find the type of fonts you are looking for. The information is available in Typeset, but it's obscured in a cascade of font information which makes it all but useless.

For these reasons I have not paid to upgrade my copy of Typeset. The developer rested too long on his laurels and neglected user feedback, preferring to do things his way. So, if his product dies it will be by his choice and by his own hand.

"New version still problematic"

July 03, 2003  |  By fredfass

 |  Version: Typeset 1.6.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you need to view only a small amount of fonts, fine, this program will work. But if intend to view thousands of files, beware! After I dragged my Font Reserve Vault to a new set in Typeset it took over 2 hours to scan the 10,000+ fonts. Then, as happened with an earlier version, after I attempted to view my "Font Reserve" fonts in Typset my entire computer system slowed to a CRAWL (on a dual 867 G4). I almost had to shut the computer down to regain control, but after about 20 minutes of waiting i was able to force-quit Typeset.

NOT RECOMMENDED!

"Not bad"

June 28, 2003  |  By pixelgem

 |  Version: Typeset 1.6.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Typeset is a pretty good program, but not without some glitches (which make the $25 price a bit steep for this shareware program). Only about 30% of my dingbat fonts show up in dingbat form. The other 70% they just show up as Charcoal of Chicago! Also, I've discovered that the Character Set function is not 100% accurate for all fonts. OS X.3 Panther is supposed to come out with a font viewing and management utility--we'll see if that works better.

"WHY SO SLOW?"

May 12, 2003  |  By fredfass

 |  Version: Typeset 1.6.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I dragged and dropped my Font Reserve Vault folder into Typeset so I could preview all of my fonts. Unfortuntately it took about an hour for Typeset to process 1/3 of them, and it pretty much took over the entire computer in doing so (everything slowed to a near halt on my dual 867 G4). I had to do a force quit to get the use of my computer back. Perhaps it would've worked fine after all 3000 fonts went through Typeset's slothful processing but I don't want my computer hijacked for 3 hours to find out. Guess I'll use this program to preview installed fonts only, for which it seems capable.

"It Works again in X"

May 12, 2003  |  By WhiteDog

 |  Version: Typeset 1.6.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had some problems with an earlier version of TypeSet in OS X 10.2.4, but that could have been something in the OS as 10.2.4 was buggy in a lot of ways. Anyhow, TypeSet is working fine again in 10.2.6.
