"Way too Difficult"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
Easy to use up until it is time to get the refund
Cons
Can't get the refund money
Customer service is horribleSummary
I have used TurboTax for many years. I am a freelancer, so TT makes it easy to get everything done. Up until this year, I haven't ever had any problems. This year, however, has been a nightmare. Money should have been in my bank account this morning. It isn't there. Santa Barbara Tax Processing Group, TT's contracted processor, claims to have deposited my funds last night into my account. Funds aren't there and they aren't pending. Called Santa Barbara for the ACH Trace ID, which every ACH transfer has, and they can't give it to me. They say it isn't available. They even tried to tell me that MY BANK was supposed to give it to me. That isn't the case; the originating institution is the one who has to provide the Trace ID. So, here I am 4 phone calls to TT and SBBTG, as well as 2 to my bank, and I still don't have my money.

"Support is atrociously bad"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
Um, let's see. It has my data from last year. Support does answer the phone in a reasonable amount of time (well, assuming they don't tell you to call the wrong number that only has an automated attendent)
Cons
Support is totally clueless. Technical problems with discount cookies.
Summary
I had technical problems with my return (using the online version) because I made a false start. I heard about the free returns if you go through the IRS site so went there and clicked through to turbotax (I did my return there last year and wanted easy access to those numbers.) I have a fairly complicated return but nowhere on the IRS website or on Turbotax's "TaX Freedom" website do they tell you you can't use the free returns for complicated situations. They merely say your income has to below such-and-such, and I easily qualified for that.
I logged in using my account information from last year and was surprised that they didn't seem to know anything about me. I started entering information then quickly realized that I would not be able to use that product. When I went back to the initial screen I saw that the "Home & Business" product was $74.95 for federal only. So I went to Fidelity Investments and found their 25% turbotax discount link, clicked on that and when I got to the turbotax site the price shown was now $56.22. I clicked on that choice, logged in again and started filling out the form. Again it was not remembering anything from last year. When I got to the point where I really needed it to be pulling in last year's numbers, I opened up a chat session with support. I spent 1.5 hours with him and he could not figure anything out, kept telling me to hold on. He apparently couldn't even find my account, kept asking me if I was spelling my email address correctly even though I was logged in to turbotax at that moment through that address. Finally he said there was nothing that could be done. I recalled seeing a "start over" button somewhere and asked him if starting over would help. He said no, it wouldn't. So I tried it anyway and it worked. As soon as I started again, it pulled in my information.
But when I was done and ready to file, they apparently forgot my Fidelity cookie and wanted to charge me $74.95. This time I called support (had to try twice, first time the popup directed me to call a number dedicated to something else).
I spent 50 minutes on the phone with (name withheld) to try to resolve my billing question. She had no clue but was chatting online with a support person who also had no clue. She tried to tell me to take the matter up with Fidelity but that is ridiculous, they have nothing to do with it. Finally she told me to start my return over. I had already had to start my return over once. If I start it over again I will start it with H&R Block, not turbotax. I finally asked to speak to a supervisor. She put me on hold for 10 minutes and came back and said the supervisor could resolve it but does not take direct calls, but would call me back within 24-48 hours. It has been 46 hours now and no call. In three hours I will start downloading H&R BLock if I don't get a call. Next year I won't even think about turbotax. -

Cons

"I am grateful for TurboTax for my new career."
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
Free version available.
Cons
Free is expensive when it does not result in lower taxes or an increased refund.
Summary
Turbo Tax got me a $1400 refund. I then got a free second look at H&R Block and the refund went up to $2400. That is when I decided I wanted to work for HRB. I am in my second year as a licensed tax preparer and have advanced 6 levels so that I can now do complex returns.

"Turbo Tax deluxe 2010 1.0 a piece of junk!!!"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
There are so many problems with Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 and Turbo Tax it isn't funny. I'm returning it tomorrow for a refund, it wouldn't load from the disc.
Cons
Sam's Club is giving refunds if you purchased it there.
Summary
The older versions worked fine, they need to hire some competent software people.

"Works great!"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
Price, ease of use
Cons
Not enough warnings for the DIYer's.
Summary
I have used both Business and Personal TT for as long as they have produced tax software with no problems. You need to know some basic tax law to get it right but....... TT makes the process a bit easier with their "Easy Step" interview process. If you don't know tax law you shouldn't be preparing tax returns yourself.

"total rip off"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
easy to use...
Cons
everything, including the way turbotax does business
Summary
i used turbo tax on line for 10 yrs. last year however, every time I submitted my state return, the WI dept of revenue had no record of ever receiving it. I tried several times with the same result. I contact turbo tax customer service and ask for a refund of the state tax filing fee, they refused saying that "the charge was for filling out the form NOT for actually filing it" Plus they charge you a 'bank filing" fee to receive direct deposit. In the end I paid almost $80 for my FREE fed tax,a wisconsin state filing that didnt work and the bank fee. This year i Paid NOTHING using HR Block

"AVOID THIS SOFTWARE"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
Cheap
Works for the most basic returnsCons
Misses deductions
Easy to misinterpret what it asks.
Easy to miss credits you may be entitled to
Allows you to commit tax suicide, with the help of the IRSSummary
This thing is like an electric saw. In the hands of a knowledgeable user, it works, kinda. For those who are not up to date on the zillions of changes in the law in the last year, avoid it! Who knows all of those changes, some of which are subtle and complex? For my money, it makes no sense to "bet" on some home tax program and risk the wrath of the IRS. Go get a good CPA or EA. They are worth their fees.

"User must be very careful when using TurboTax"
Version: TurboTax Deluxe 2010 1.0
Pros
During taxes by hand would be difficult
Is able to handle international mutual fundsCons
Improper handling of 401(k) roll overs
Automatic download of mutual fund data has major glitchesSummary
There are few choices available for tax software. Each has its problems. One should avoid using TurboTax if one does not have a basic understanding of how taxes should work. In one case I used the automatic download feature for the sale of a Vanguard mutual fund. It listed the entire amount as a capital gain. I had to correct this manually. In another instance TurboTax was unable to handle the roll over a 401(k) account into another 401(k) account, in this case trying to make it a taxable event. Either of these types of errors can have major tax consequences if not caught by the TurboTax user.
