Editors' review

TubeMaster Plus seems like a good idea: find video and MP3 content, download it, and convert it to different formats. But the program's poorly thought-out interface and application instability will likely frustrate everyone but the most persevering.

TubeMaster Plus comes with numerous settings, such as an autostart feature, size restriction (helpful for excluding small downloads that are more likely to be advertisements), language, and browser monitoring. You can set the video codec to be used as well as the MP3 quality and default multimedia player. The program is organized into four tabs: Media Surf (a Web browser), Media Download and Conversion, Media Search, and MP3 Search. You either surf to a video or use the Media Search tool to look for videos among 80-plus sites. (You won't use MP3 Search to look for MP3s, because that function does not work.) Once a video has been found, the application will grab a video copy from the stream after you clicked the Start Media Capture button.

This took us a while to figure out, because clicking on the Tutorial button caused a crash that we had to Ctrl-Alt-Del away. A second attempt worked, taking us to a deeply ugly set of screenshots annotated to explain various fields and progress bars. Sadly, the tutorial covered only one user scenario, leaving us to ponder such questions as how to find our downloaded files and why TubeMaster Plus stops downloading after pre-roll video plays. At the end of the day, TubeMaster Plus is a good idea that suffers at the hands of poor execution and quality control.

    "Has its problems, but it's still a fantastic to have."

    May 18, 2011   |   By RickyWillems

    Version: TubeMaster++ 2.3

    Pros

    -Automatically downloads any streaming content you view online, audio, video, flash, ect.
    -Completely Free
    -Light on resources
    -Converts into a variety of file formats
    -You can select the bitrate to save files in

    Cons

    -Automatic Media naming feature is buggy and usually doesn't work, and its annoying to fill in the name and artist for every song I download.
    -Built in media search functionality is worthless
    -Tutorial is garbage

    Summary

    I love this program simply for how well it does what I want it to do. I've never had any crashing issues excluding one of the convert options that warns its "for experts only". Basicly, I can run this in the background whenever Im online, and where ever I come across streaming music or movies, I have a copy of my own. The auto naming function is nice, works on stereomood and rhapsody, as well as others. I usually avoid youtube with this, as the quality there is poor.

    When looked at on the whole, Tubemaster has a lot of problems, and although the added functionality of some of its poorly designed features would be nice, none of those problems get in the way of it quickly and easily downloading music and videos for me.

    "Excellent Program, Though Not 100% Functional"

    February 22, 2010   |   By RickyWillems

    Version: TubeMaster++ 1.5

    Pros

    Great For Ripping Media Off Of Website
    Good MP3 Encoding
    Good Video Encoding

    Cons

    Media Search Function Doesn't Work Well/At All
    Auto Song Tagging Doesnt Work Very Often

    Summary

    This is a great program overall, and my choice for ripping music off the internet. It has its problems, namely the poor tagging ability and the pointlessness of its internal media search function, but is otherwise great.

    "Cotnains Trojan! Stay clear!!!"

    October 24, 2009   |   By George_A_

    Version: TubeMaster++ 1.4

    Pros

    Never used it, trojan was detected upon installation, had to run system restore to make sure any traces of this piece of junk were removed from my system....

    Cons

    Setup creates file containing Trojan!

    Summary

    Once setup is run -from download.cnet.com link- it creates a file called "js.COROI.tmp" in the installation folder. This file was immediately picked up by my antivirus as containing the trojan "Artemis!4A3A6535B28A"
    Do not download!!!
    Stay clear! (hoping that download.cnet.com moderators will pick up this "malfunction" of the software soon and remove this piece of junk from their software list...)

    "Easy to use, compatible with every site I tried."

    August 28, 2009   |   By leecottrell

    Version: TubeMaster++ 1.2

    Pros

    Video conversion starts immediately. Tubemaster identifies the commercials and the actual video correctly. Conversion time was reasonable on my archaic Pentium system.

    The user interface is pretty clean.

    Cons

    Installation was a little scary. It installed WinPcap and Java. Both programs, while legit, might scare off the average user.

    Summary

    I recommend this for your streaming capturing needs. We are using it in a school that does not have internet access in every classroom. We capture the video, place it on our roaming laptop and present it to the students.

    I like the ease of use and the conversion options. We have been able to convert for use on all of our school computers.
