If it isn't enough to chat with friends from Google, MySpace IM, Skype, and Facebook, as well as AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and IRC on Trillian't multinetwork IM app, you can comfortably count the app's deep hooks into Twitter and Facebook alerts and checking e-mail (both POP3 and IMAP varieties) as reasons for switching from your current messenger.

Among its best social networking traits, Trillian will automatically shorten URLs in your tweets, and handle direct messages, re-tweets, and replies. Twitter Trends can show up in your contact list, and you can get tweets to appear in tooltip form. Facebook features include news feed integration, Facebook in-box checking, and synchronized message updating in addition to Facebook IM. Just on these features alone, Trillian Astra offers a bit more than its IM competitors.

In addition, there's support for drag-and-drop file transferring, skins, notifications, and all sorts of tweaking in the preference menu. Trillian earns a thumbs-up for previewing a Web site when you hover the cursor over a URL in the conversation window, but the same feature is less effective and less accurate when applied to looking up definitions of terms found within the chat window (luckily, you can turn the helpers off.)

Legacy users will be pleased to know that Trillian Astra (code for version 4.0 and up) runs lighter than previous versions, and you're less likely to notice system slowdowns because of memory leaks. Video chat gets basic support. The paid upgrade gives you browser-based IM from Trillian.im, full-screen video and filters, many more visual customizations, multiple simultaneous file transfer, and themes, as well as tech support. These features are available for the first 30 days you use the free version, then they deactivate. The biggest changes, besides the reskinned interface, are the long-needed performance improvements and support for a broad range of IM protocols. Longtime fans won't be disappointed with the changes, though those using the free version clearly won't get the full effect of Trillian's more-advanced features.

"free IMs/android + multi IM accts &multi IM systems"

June 28, 2011  |  By dradamw

 |  Version: Trillian 5.0.0.33

Pros

works, easy, automatically gets contacts, lots of ways to sort and present, also supports file xfr (tested) and voice/video chat (not yet tested), free ($25 removes ads), better interface than yahoo or gmail/gtalk or myspaceIM, more control

Cons

misses some features (e.g., photo sharing on yahoo, though i don't like that anyway :) ).

Summary

get this if you want free IMs on android (probably iphone, too?)
or if you want to simultaneously use, see status of friends, and chat through multiple IM accounts on the same and/or different IM systems (yahoo msgr, gtalk, msn, aim, etc.)

"Love dis IM"

June 26, 2011  |  By skilz853

 |  Version: Trillian 5.0.0.33

Pros

Works for all my im accounts.
Once setup, it's easy to add contacts.
Has an excellent GUI.
Low on memory 5K atm.

Cons

A little difficult to get it working. I've never heard of Astra, but believe it's part of Trillian, and it seems not to work until you setup an account with Astra.

Summary

To me, it's an excellent IM client.
I'm glad I switched from MSN IM

"Beware the "Agreements"!!!"

June 20, 2011  |  By regjohnsbre

 |  Version: Trillian 5.0.0.33

Pros

Very professional product and connects to almost anything out there. Few problems with it. Thanks, Trillian, for providing this really great product to us for free!

Cons

Beware what you select (or don't UN-select) during installation. They make their ad-ware look like license agreements, and they have multiple boxes to UN-check, to prevent installing their annoying and intrusive ad-ware.

Summary

Recommendation: ALWAYS select "No Thanks" when you see it during installation, and un-check anything that doesn't prevent you from installing the actual product itself.

One more note: The account you create with Trillian is "sticky," which means it continues to exist even after you uninstall the product. This can be a really nice convenience, but you may want to weigh this against your concern about whether they might get hacked and your account IDs and passwords compromised. I have not noticed whether there is or is not an option to destroy that information when you uninstall, but I don't believe you can use the product without keeping that information on their servers. (Could possibly be wrong about this last comment.)

"Theres annoying Ads..."

June 13, 2011  |  By 3atter

 |  Version: Trillian 5.0.0.33

Pros

Everyone knows why, supports aim, yahoo messenger, msn, etc.

Cons

1) Ads... I can see their downfall now. Annoying pop-up Ads. 2) Ads. 3) Layout a bit simple, I like the colors, like blue icon for MSN, yellow icon for AIM, etc. 4) Finally the worst part is... Ads.

Summary

Maybe I will try... http://pidgin.im/ or downgrade my Trillian to the old version.

Updated on Jun 13, 2011

I just realize, its the same Trillian as the old one. Just simple looking without colors and it has horrible Ads.

"Trillian just gets worse and worse"

June 06, 2011  |  By rsloan60

 |  Version: Trillian 5.0.0.33

Pros

The more features Cerulean removes, the fewer features that will be hopelessly broken.

Cons

Besides the crashes, besides the abhorrent user interface, besides the fact that it can't retain a connection for longer than 9 minutes, well nothing.

Summary

After a 18 month hiatus, I thought I'd give Trillian another go. It has so much promise.

For upgraders, version 5 is a collosal failure - most useful features have been removed (from version 4) and subsequently replaced with useless features that you'll struggle to turn off or that are mostly broken and you'll end up not being able to use them anyway.

The "feature" of having an Astra account still cannot be disabled and as usual, Cerulean hasn't provided any sort of security assurances beyond "we promise it's good"

Pay-for support is entirely useless and the community support appears to be mostly rabid Trillian fans. I can't figure that part out but their responses consist almost soley of "Trillian Rocks! Change your Skins!" Not helpful but I guess it's nice to have fans.

Been running for a week now and the product crashes, appears to sling advertisements at you even though you've paid for the ad-free version. I guess they can't turn that off or choose not to or "Paid" really means "Ha Sucker" I don't know.

Overall, I would have expected that after 18 months, Trillian might have improved just a little. It got worse. It's a shame really, it's got such promise. Seems to have reached a development plateau a few versions back.
