    "Deception and Trickery"

    September 2, 2010  |   By Bonjiro

    Version: Trillian Astra 4.2.0.22

    Pros

One of the first IM clients - was great for many years.

    Cons

Has become corrupted with greedy, nasty, deceptive practices meant to trick you into installing toolbars and third party software. This is just malware now.

    Summary

I used Trillian for probably 6 years. It was one of the first and best multiple IM clients. I got a message this morning saying that AIM was no longer supported and it disconnected me every time I tried to connect. A link in the message connected me to a web page where I thought I would be downloading an update for Trillian but it was a a new AOL instant messenger that wanted to take over my browser home pages and desktop, etc. NO THANKS! I'd never use an AOL product anyways.

So I went to the Trillian site and downloaded Trillian Astra 4.2.0.22. During the install, I was presented with several deceptive screens. The first was trying to trick me into installing the Ask.com toolbar - there were two checkboxes. Both needed to be unchecked to prevent it's installation, and the second one was "Agree to the terms of use and install the Ask.com toolbar". What a nasty trick! What is one supposed to do? I unchecked it and proceeded. The next screen was a similar trick, trying to install other garbage charading as accepting the terms of agreement, with tricky options trying to fool you into accepting it. At this point, I recognized it as malware and spam, and quit the installation.

How far you've fallen. Trying to TRICK your loyal customers? That's crossing a line. So I'm done with you. I'm trying Pidgin.

"Too bad for no ZERO stars - Astra is complete garbage"

    August 30, 2010  |   By rsloan60

    Version: Trillian Astra 4.2.0.22

    Pros

Nice goal of having multi-protocol chat but this product was clearly designed and developed by rank amateurs.

It sort of uninstalls but not really. Must manually clean up and there is no way to remove the information the vendor steals from you.

    Cons

Privacy invasions, crashes, simply doesn't work.

    Summary

Run, run away... Do NOT install this.
