"It was very, very helpful for my audio needs"
Version: Total Recorder Professional Edition 5.3
Pros
First of all, recording quality is very good, especially if you record from software source, such as Internet radio player (which I do quite often). No need to play with recording levels, sound is captured in digital form and is identical to the original.
Then for most playback programs, MP3 tags are captured and filled in automatically during recording. You also can tell Total Recorder to make a new file when your player stars to play a different song, so all the songs are neatly stored in individual files, with their tags filled in.
A couple of times I used a scheduler that took a little to figure out, but then once you configure it, it works very well and can even close all active sound programs in the end of recording.
Oh, and it comes with free Digital Mixer whcih is particularly useful for recording voice over misic (and vice versa :-)) etc.
I also understand that I will be given free updates to all new versions when they are out.
Cons
The heavy terminology they use in the Help file is sometimes not easy to understand, unless you a sound engeneer (and I'm not). But then, the whole task is new to me, so I'm learning....:-))

"Rock Solid Software - Simple to use"
Version: Total Recorder Professional Edition 5.1
Pros
I've been using TR "Standard" for several years now and just upgraded to the "Pro" version. Both are simple to use and very stable.
The primary function of Total Recorder is to be able to record from any source on your computer. This means you can record a webcast, or a meeting, or whatever regardless of whether the audio is coming over the sound card or external source. It does this with remarkable ease and reliability.
In order to achieve this, TR installs a device level driver onto your machine so it can take any audio that comes across the sound card like a loopback cable to the application. Its simple, but it works. And for this type of applicance computing, simple and works are what's required.
The interface is fairly self explanatory. The "Pro" version offers a lot more control over the editing of audio files. This was the reason I upgraded. It allows you to combine files, delete a part of, insert at any point, etc. You can upgrade from the Standard version to the Pro version for a fee.
The obvious things I'll state is that the software allows you to record as much as your computer will handle. That is, you're just limited by memory and disk space. The codec processing time is done efficiently so as not to strain the machine (like some other apps I've tried). It supports MP3 (as well as WAV). MP3 support is native but not pre-installed (its a free download).
The Pro version allows you to view the detailed audio graphs. This has been very useful because you can now be very accurate in your splicing.
All in all, its very well written software that does what it promises to do.
Cons
I guess it could have a few more features. For instance, the noise-reduction feature is an add-on ($$). I don't really see this as a "CON", but its the only one I can think of. High Criteria (the makers of the softare) do offer several free plug-ins.
More Skins might be another suggestion (so there is some variety on the interface). Its simple, efficient, but a little bland.

"So good I PAID for it!"
Version: Total Recorder Professional Edition 5.0
Summary
Quite frankly this was the best thing I found after a lot of frustration with inferior interfaces on products like Nero Wave Editor. Editing and managing files is a snap. My primary use is recording radio broadcasts and editing out commercials. Then recording of streams and converting LPs and tapes to wav files for conversion to CD. They just came out with an addon that removes clicks and hiss and works quite well. The mp3 "problem" Yogi talks about is due to mp3 licensing restrictions. The cost would be higher if they included more than the default MP3 codec in there. Therefore you can use LAME or buy mp3pro or use OGG! Sounds like very good product versatility to me!

"Terrible user interface"
Version: Total Recorder Professional Edition 5.0
Summary
It's amazing how High Criteria has made this program harder and harder to use. After a year of struggling with this program, I am finally dumping it because it is just too difficult to manage. All I want to do is record web streams and convert them to MP3 files to play on an iPod. The latest version of the software requires additional plug ins for MP3 files and the Read Me tutorials are useless. This program demonstrates why software engineers should not build applications without good UI support.
