"Not for medium or serious projects / litigators beware."
Version: Timeline Maker Professional 2.1
Pros
Barely anything, Progeny attempts to offer this software to the legal profession and it can only handle a few events before it slows down dramatically. The user interface is a rudimentary version of Excel spreadsheet w/o the flexibility.
Cons
After about 100 events the software performance slows down dramatically, we've tried every and the fastest PC's in our office including contemporary Quad core CPU's operating on SSD's and the presentation still drags. Powerpoint integration sucks
Summary
The inability to just remove certain columns in the schema makes it frustrating, along with poor performance when trying to populate with any serious projects.
It was advertised to us a litigation solution but after 100 events from a mal practice / negligence case the entire app drags horribly, we tried every one of fast systems in our office from our best notebooks (Duo Core CPU's w 4GB of RAM on OCz SSD's) to considering just remot'ing into our servers and executing there but even a dual Quad core Xeon (8 core's in SMP) and 16GB of RAM running from a RAID5 array of SSD's still didn't improve performance.
Our debuggers demonstrated it was the application responsible for poor performance and not our hardware or OS.
The software is too confined regarding settings, proprietary in every way it seems more kludgy than functional.
Import / Export functions are horrible, it supposedly can export and import TSV and CSV's but the only formats it seems to import are its own exported files. Trying to import excel files is painful and tempting just to reenter via copy and paste than wasting hours since there isn't decent error reporting advising the user which excel Row is killing the import.
The program has the ability to link files but can't work with relative paths so any aspirations of using it for a self contained demo are wasted aspirations unless you know for sure what the recipients CD drive letter is. You can always link to a website but some clients are insistent their litigation data remains off web servers and we can agree.
The balloon charts are useless since there isn't a simple way to organize all of the events and your chart becomes 90 pages tall by 2 pages wide.
THERE ISN'T A BASIC WAY TO JUST DRAW A LINE BETWEEN TWO EVENTS YOU'D LIKE TO DESCRIBE AS RELATED / THIS REQUIRES US TO PRINT IT OUT AND JUST MANUALLY DRAW LINES WITH RULERS OR USE SNAG-IT TO OVERLAY LINES AND MAKE SCREEN PRINTS !!!! -
