Editors note: This review was modified from the original to reflect changes in the publishers description of the product as a complementary rather than standalone package.

Called CyberHawk under its previous owners, PC Tools' ThreatFire is a useful program but only in limited situations. It offers real-time prevention of virus and malware infections by identifying suspicious behaviors ("zero-day" events) as they happen, before malicious code installs itself on your PC. However, ThreatFire does not offer an on-demand scan for viruses already on your computer, though it will perform an on-demand scan for other malware. The name says "antivirus", but if you're looking for an all-in-one on-demand bug killer we recommend looking for a product that includes both on-demand virus scanning and real-time protection.

ThreatFire does do some things very well. The software real-time protection didn't noticeably slow down our Windows Vista computer, and the customizable advanced settings were excellent. Users can pick and choose their preferred trusted processes and create rules for detection, such as scanning for SCR files created by an email client. You can also avail yourself of the scheduler, and create a system restore point before moving threats into quarantine.

However, once installed, ThreatFire is difficult to remove from your startup routine without uninstalling it. The absence of on-demand virus scanning means that this app is best used in conjunction with a program that offers on-demand virus detection and removal. While ThreatFire offers some compelling features, competing freeware security programs provide a more comprehensive combination of real-time and on-demand virus scanning.

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.5

Pros

Nothing good to say about this rubbish

Cons

Screwed up my XP sysytem within 48 hours , very strange errors and very slow running. Finally had to re-install Windows from a saved image

Summary

A complete mess , if you want Windoes Xp to get screwed this is the software to do it. Luckily I had an image backup. If I hadnt had one it would have been a complete re-install of the OS.

"Don't know what it does, but it does it well"

September 02, 2009  |  By nmweatherman

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.5

Pros

"Quiet" and unobtrusive

Cons

Doesn't remove or quarantine virus

Summary

Some day, some software company, somewhere, is going to make an antivirus program that doesn't completely take over every aspect of your OS; that doesn't slow your computer's processing speed and web surfing speed by half; that doesn't "nag" you to death; that gets along with other programs; and finally one that easily updates and uninstalls as needed. I have tried almost every free antivirus offered at cnet but discarded them all as obtrusive and slowing my web surfing. ThreatFire detects "zero-day events" whatever that is. Maybe that's like when your kids are suddenly too quiet...hmmm...there's something going on. I hope ThreatFire will let me know when something "odd" is going on.

I have a PC Tools Firewall on my computer and ThreatFire works seamlessly with it. It does not slow my surfing down noticeably and it doesn't nag me to death. Except for its little flame icon I wouldn't know it's there. I use my computer by the WAAP method (a Wing And A Prayer). I don't go to flaky websites, I don't surf porn. My web-based email service scans for virus there. I generally go to the same websites each day that I already trust. My IE8 blocks pop-ups, etc. So I am going to make do without another cumbersome and domineering antivirus program (that's the WAAP system). ThreatFire nicely fills the bill.

"Seems ok,But may leave you un-sure,and doubtful"

August 25, 2009  |  By nighttracker

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.5

Pros

PC Tools are pretty Reliable. But,they need to give this program another look-over get an update on this.

Cons

PC Tools is a legit.company and they do give good info out to the public and most often it is the correct info.Have never found them into SpyWare Business

Summary

although this is not a full fledged anti virus program and only meant to co-exist with your anti-virus program,I would like to know how it can co-exist with anyone of the virus programs on the market ??? This is puzzling.and there are no up-dates to the program?????
