I bet there were a lot of us who didn't send email, even though we could've. It's just the postings at usenet got weird, long and convoluted and flew all over the place, so I just sat back with a wait and see attitude. And the saga has been full of ups and downs. You are/were appreciated, and I wish you well no matter what happens. Really, man, Thank You.

    "The power newsreader's newsreader"

    January 28, 2004  |   By Roquentin

    Version: Thoth 1.7.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It's got a bit of a learning curve, and some of its many, many preferences and options could be organized more intuitively and made more accessible, but if you use more than one news server or you do lots of searching (without having to open the group!), posting, or downloading (esp. of multipart messages), there is nothing else for the Mac that comes close. I do wish it allowed one to color the BACKGROUND of a filtered thread rather than just the text itself (MT-Newswatcher does this right), but otherwise an unbeatable, stable, mature, and feature-packed app for experienced newsreaders. I've tried them all, and I keep coming back to Thoth.

    Version: Thoth 1.7.2

    Summary

Extremely solid, and flexible. You have to dig a bit at the prefs to get it configured just the way you want but it allows you a LOT of configuration. Basically MTNewswatcher on steroids!

    "Continues to get better :)"

    July 10, 2003  |   By Mathue

    Version: Thoth 1.7.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Been using Thoth and it's earlier versions for quite some time now. It's a bit challenging at times but once things are set it's great.

One suggestion, I'd LOVE to see spell checking implemented.

    "Power Newsreader for Binaries Groups"

    July 9, 2003  |   By Niccolo

    Version: Thoth 1.7.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you're active in the binaries groups, Thoth is the newsreader of choice. It's fast, stable (especially the new Mach-0 version for OS X), and highly configurable. The documentation is somewhat weak (compared to MT-NewsWatcher, which is more "readable" for lack of a better term. Check out the nice tutorial on Regular Expressions, for example), and there is a learning curve for understanding & configuring the huge number of prefs.

As has been suggested before, it would be cool if Thoth did progressive download of movies and music (as long as it doesn't compromise stability).

P.S. I've found that checking the 'Yield During Mousedown' pref has eliminated the few crashes I experienced (when sending new posts and closing windows with lots of background processes).

"Still lacks in features and speed"

    July 9, 2003  |   By Rogue

    Version: Thoth 1.7.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you use this program (which is the best MAC type newsreader) you haven't use Pan.
Install X11 and use a linux newsreader like Pan, which has all the features & speed you could ever need.

    "Still the best"

    July 9, 2003  |   By s. stevens

    Version: Thoth 1.7.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've tried every newsreader out there, and except for diiva for pictures (which is what it's only good for), this is an excellent utility. I used to use hogwasher, but found its interface too clumsy and non-mac-like. When I started using Thoth about a year ago, I felt like I found nirvana. It can get a bit quirky at times, but the author is very receptive to suggestions and bug reports. The setting up of a newsserver is easy via the wizard involved, and I have to say my only complaint would be there are far too many preference settings in far too many places (and some override others while others may or may not), which can get very confusing and tedious when you think you've turned on or off a feature only to find another set of preferences has overruled your choice. Ugh. I'm waiting for the day when Brian just says, 'here are your prefs, set 'em and forget 'em.' Than I'll die a happy man. ;)
