Thoth 1.3.1 for Mac User Reviews

"Simply excellent - For power users though"
Version: Thoth 1.7.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Thoth is one of those news reading applications that really shines. It has been incredibly stable and the author is responsive and helpful.
Thoth is a power tool. It takes some reading to get it configured correctly but once that is done (took me about an hour) I haven't had to touch it even through all the upgrades (since 1.4).
Thoth can adapt to any newsreading style. If you like to do it on line (ie broadband) it can do it. if you like offline reading, it can do that. If you are a binary leech, it does that extremely well too.
If you are just interested in reading messages and don't want all the powerful features, I would go for something like Halime (free and easy to use but is not as stable). MacSOUP is also excellent but doesn't handle binaries without helpers.
If you are a usenet junkie then this is the overall best solution. -
"THE Binary Group Newsreader"
Version: Thoth 1.7.0
Summary

I generally stick to binaries groups, so I'm not sure whether Thoth is the smoothest newsreader for discussions... but when it comes to downloading binaries, it is without competition. It provides the power to queue, re-sort, and adjust the download of hundreds or thousands of multi-part, encoded posts (even automatically handles decoding yenc), and does it with little or no problems. I've downloaded literally hundreds of gigabytes of data over the past couple of years using Thoth, and in the past year have had essentially zero crashes. It is a dream come true for what I want. -
"Fantastic"
Version: Thoth 1.7.1
Summary

This is the granddaddy of all current newsreaders on the Mac, having derived from the original NewsWatcher which was by far the best vintage reader. Stability was a problem a couple versions ago, but since 1.7, I've had no crashes, no stalls on lengthy binary d/l's and just pure satisfaction in a program which is doing what it is designed to do. -
"Stabilty Has Improved"
Version: Thoth 1.7.0
Summary

at least for me. I had repeated crashes with 1.5.x and 1.6.x until the last release prior to 1.7 . 1.7 seems faster for me, although it did stop deleting temp files, though my prefs are set to delete them. -
"CRASH"
Version: Thoth 1.7.0
Summary

Crash after crash after crash, timeouts after timeouts, warnings after warnings....this thing just doesn't work...I download headers from a group, start browsing thru the list and I take too long?? to do that, when I doubleclick a file, it starts downloading and then either, crash!! or I get 3, 4 warnings that something's wrong with my newsserver probably and then when it finally starts to download a jpg for example....CRASH!!! -
"It keeps crashing on me..."

...whatever I do, sometimes it just works, other times I click on a newsmessage and it just crashes, if I browse through the message list and click a message (after maybe 20-30 secs) it times out and it gives me a message saying the connection to the newsserver is lost or whatever....I wish it would just work all the time, but it just doesn't, need to restart the program everytime at least 3 times... -
"As with those that came before,"

v1.7 of Thoth is a buzz saw. I can power through my list of groups very quickly (more time to browse the iTunes Music Store). No fuss it just works. Kinda like OS X.
