"Best usenet reader!"

November 08, 2011  |  By deanras

 |  Version: Thoth 1.9.0.18

Pros

Thoth does everything a usenet reader should do and does it very well. The interface is easy to use and lots of great options. Has SSL.

Cons

No bad things, really.

Summary

The small charge for the software is well worth it! Thanks to the developer!

"Best usenet/binary client ever!"

November 14, 2010  |  By scotts13--2008

 |  Version: Thoth 1.8.5

Pros

Easy(ish) to use, extremely flexible, fast.

Cons

It appears the author will not be offering an Intel-native version; i.e., the stillborn Thoth 2.0.

"The least terrible of a poor bunch"

October 06, 2010  |  By grh-akl

 |  Version: Thoth 1.8.4

Pros

Relatively bug-free

Cons

Inadequate filtering, developer has attitude problems, outdated interface

Summary

No idea why v 1.84 is surfacing now. It's been around for a very long time. Years, I think. The developer is a well-known, whiney pissant who, on whim, enters and exits phases of refusing to respond to emails or offers to buy the software. This, despite frequent complaints that no one wants to buy! Be careful what you email to him or he might lock you out like Jerry Seinfeld's Soup Nazi.

The whole category of usenet client software for Mac is very poorly-served. (Maybe for Windows too!) Thoth might be considered the best of a pathetic bunch. It has an outdated interface which is, however, adequate if uninspiring.

Setting up Thoth is non-standard or, at least, non-intuitive although the on-screen notes are somewhat helpful. But setting up might take a while if you don't read those notes carefully.

Filtering is inadequate for today's usenet world. The newsgroups abound with morons and ********. To effectively deal with them, there needs to be more-sophisticated filters, perhaps a chaining option too. In the Windows world, experienced users seem to have no difficulty locking out specific morons. This is often not possible with Thoth because the morons are more-clever than Thoth is.

Re-ordering items in the Queued Transfers List window is non-standard. No undo of deletions is available.

"Mark cross-posted items as read" does not work as it should.

Thoth hides its various files obscurely. Syncing two Macs is difficult and time-consuming. Thoth needs to keep track of several things ? newsreader server details, personalities, groups to read, items requested to be downloaded, filters. It would be a big help if they were all stored together in a preferences file that can be easily found, amended, copied to another machine.

There are not a lot of usenet newsreaders for the Mac. Some people prefer others (like Hogwasher for example) but, for me, Thoth is the best of a poor bunch. I've tried Hogwasher and I don't like it at all. I just wish BC would bring Thoth into the 21st century (AKA OSX) with, say, version 2, a proper manual, a bright, attractive interface and preferences that are easier to manage.

"still the best"

January 07, 2007  |  By barberfloyd

 |  Version: Thoth 1.8.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using this reader for over ten years (it was YA-NewsWatcher) and it's better than ever. I've tried all the others and I always end up back with Thoth. I'll keep using it until it becomes extinct. It is a shame that it is no longer available for purchase. I hope the developer changes his mind about that some day. Thanks for the updates Brian.

Thanks so much for Thoth 1.8.3. It is still the best Mac Newsreader. Should you ever decide to release Thoth 2.0, I would gladly buy it again.

"Still The King Of NewsReaders But No SSL"

November 03, 2006  |  By Razzledazzle

 |  Version: Thoth 1.8.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Thatis a feature I would love to see in Thoth! Unfortunately there are not enough users willing to pay more for Brian to develop it further. I certainly would having loved Thoth (and it's companion PTAH) from the inception of these great Apps.

 |  Version: Thoth 1.8.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Have used Thoth since inception, and it is the best there is. I wouldn't want to travel the newsgroups without it, and am glad there's a update, downloaded just fine, hopefully a foretelling of ones to come...

Full Specifications

What's new in version 1.4.3
  • The preferences setting that used to determine whether a subscribed group list window would be automatically saved when quitting now sets whether the window will be automatically saved whenever it is closed.
  • Added support for inline image display. This is still not recommended as the preferred way to view images, as it bypasses Thoth's support for multiple download connections and image windows that let you magnify images or resize them to fit the window, easily center the image in the window, etc.
  • Moved the preferences related to image viewing to a new preferences panel, and added some more preferences to allow further customization of image viewing.
  • Completed support for long file names under OS X by adding long name support for saved articles and messages and the various Export commands. The checkbox used to enable or disable long file name support under OS X has been moved from the "Extracting Binaries" to the "Miscellaneous" prefs panel.
  • Consolidated the old "Screen Fonts" and "Text Styling" preferences panels.
  • Added an "Open Personality" hierarchical menu to the File menu to make it more obvious how to edit an existing personality.
  • Reorganized other preference panels, newsgroup settings panels, the File menu, the Special menu, and deleted "Show Filters List" from the News menu (now "Show/Hide Filters List" is only in the Windows menu).
  • Files in the Help menu are now sorted using "Natural Order" sorting rules.
  • Added a new "Newsreading" preference to set the maximum number of kept articles to display in a new article list window. In online mode this value sets the maximum number of kept articles that will be added to the newly fetched articles for display in an article list window. In offline mode it sets the maximum number of posts to display in an article list window (since all such posts are kept articles). In online mode option double-clicking a newsgroup in a group list window now shows a revised "Maximum Number to Fetch" dialog that allows setting both the old maximum number to fetch from the news server and the new maximum number of kept posts to display values. In offline mode the "Maximum Number to Fetch" dialog just has the maximum number of kept posts to display setting.
  • When the toolbar is shown in the "Queued Transfers List" window, it's now possible to resize the toolbar to show fewer or more status panes by dragging the divider between the panel area of the window and the list of queued transfers. This may be useful if you never have more than one news server open and only have the top few queued transfer connections enabled.
  • Added new options for automatically creating a new, uniquely named file when saving an article or message and there's already a file with the same name in the default destination folder.
  • Changed formatting of subject line for binary posts to not show encoding method when yEncode is not being used.
  • Fixed a problem with the getopenservers Apple Event returning the "None" server in the list of open servers.
  • Fixed a problem with zoomed text, HTML, and movie windows not avoiding covering a docked status window.
  • Fixed a crashing bug introduced in 1.4.2 when using the Next Group command in an article list window opened from the full newsgroup list window rather than a subscribed group window.
  • Fixed some yEncode related problems.
