"Restored all of my photos from my CF card"

December 28, 2009  |  By themanualbuzzer

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Pros

Free, worked for what I needed it to do, online documentation helped guide me through the process

Cons

The program runs in terminal, so it may be difficult to use for most. It took a little time to find my memory card in the file system

Summary

The PhotoRec software worked great for what I needed and beat having to pay 30 bucks or more for a program to recover my photos. Somehow the filenames had become corrupted and I was unable to transfer them with Picasa, iPhoto or a transfer directly from the card to the hard drive.

So after going to the default directory, I had to go up a few levels to find the 'Volume' directory that the CF card was located in. That was the most difficult part and may have been easier on a PC to locate (for me)

As I type this review it apparently is even going back and recovering photos I deleted long ago (photos I shot in August and it is now December . . . and it's still going).

"Exactly what I needed"

December 10, 2009  |  By brian.donat

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Yesterday, my wife's macbook started up to a gray blinking folder with a question mark in it. As far as I can tell, it lost the file allocation table, as I had to create a new partition on the hard drive before I could reinstall OS X, thus losing everything on the computer (including several papers she needed to complete her masters degree, and our wedding pictures).

After struggling through the "step-by-step" instructions (we're both classical musicians, not techies) I managed to get the program searching the newly "erased" drive. About 16 hours later, it produced some 800,000+ recovered files. It took a while to go through it all, but in the end I found every important file I was looking for.

Bottom line: it works, and it works very well. It's a little intimidating, but not impossible, and it'll require some patience and effort on your part to wade through the results, but it performs exactly as advertised, and you can't beat the price.

Thank you for creating a tool to help the poor average guy who has had something bad happen to his computer.

"PhotoRec is Phenomenal!"

July 15, 2009  |  By rotamo

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Pros

Recovered all the files I wanted on an accidentally formatted MicroSD card, including movies and mp3s in addition to the photos. Tried using VirtualLab Data Recovery first, but it only found photos & you have to pay to actually recover what it sees.

Cons

Slight learning curve if you're not used to using Darwin, but after carefully reading the online documentation, all my questions were answered.

Summary

PhotoRec found and recovered a whole lot more than VirtualLab, and it's free! I couldn't recommend it more for Mac users who need to recover accidentally deleted files.

"No GUI, but hey, it's free."

January 05, 2009  |  By MacRepairMan

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Pros

was able to recover a few files, but it took forever

Cons

Seems like a bad port of a DOS app or something. Questionable free software.

Summary

You get what you pay for IMO.

"PhotoRec is fantastic"

September 20, 2008  |  By desktopia

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Pros

PhotoRec is a lot easier to use than most terminal software. It was able to pull photos over a year old off of my Olympus SP-350's SD card, including the ones I was looking for, without corruption.

Cons

Non-GUI interface

"Works well"

September 17, 2008  |  By sjc132

 |  Version: TestDisk & PhotoRec (OS X) 6.3

Pros

Simple and quick.

Cons

Terminal and disk file type selection ca be a bit confusing

Summary

So I had to get some photos off an SD card from my digi camera. This app worked very well on my friends mac to find old photos. It just drops them into a directory of your choosing. No hassles. It was a bit complex to select the file/directory structure. Really handy overall, I'll use it again if I forget to back stuff up ;-)
