"stay away - this product seems to have no support"

    June 9, 2009  |   By Sschmitz2000

    Version: Tenon iTools 9.0.4

    Pros

easy to install package of tools for LAMP on Mac

    Cons

Be warned - technical support at Tenon is pretty poor. If you are thinking of using this company's products to host something professional, I would think twice. If something goes wrong, you are on your own.

    Summary

Think about having a hosting company handle everything for you. Its going to be less painful and at least you will have the support as well as the hosting. With Tenon, you are pretty much left to your own devices.

    "Counterpoint...."

    Version: Tenon iTools 8.2.2

    Summary

ITools is a blessing; it worked flawlessly for me; it doesn't suck.

ITools is well respected, and pretty much takes the pain out of installing Apache, PHP and MySQL. Sure, if you're already running these items, and you have years of accumulated versions laying around your hard drive, installing a new version on top of the old grabage is likely to cause problems. Whose fault is that?

The product and the customer service is first rate. (And, if you can configure Apache in your sleep, why on earth would you even be interested in this product? Why do I get the feeling that some of the reviewers below have some other axe to grind?)

Like hundreds, or even thousands of others, I found iTools to be worth every penny.

    "WARNING!"

Incredible. Also my Mac got f'ed up, even though all I did was install the Trial, and after 5 mins, right after realizing how unnecessairy and useless this product is, uninstall using their uninstaller.

webmin at http://www.webmin.com does much more, wont f your machine and - guess, what: it is for free!

iTools is a malicious rip off. Dont use it, dont try it, never buy it, dont even use it in case you get if for free!

I use the Macintosh since 20 years, but such a thing never occured to me.

    "Incomparable performance, reliability, and support"

    Version: Tenon iTools 8.0.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
ITools is the solution for anyone that wishes to use OSX as a server (either OSXServer or OSX client). While there are many services built into OSX out of the box, iTools provides the setup tools and control panel interface for both on site and remote administration. Additionally, the integration of add-ons like PHP, MySQL, and even single-click installation of other open-source tools like WordPress, Coppermine, Gallery, phpNuke, and others makes providing these options very simple. Itools is at its heart, a set of scripts that permits the administrator of the server to manage server administration and virtual host creation. The interface is well designed offers complete control and monitoring of nearly all aspects of running a server. Features can be enabled and disabled as needed, in order to minimize processor overhead. Novices to server administration need to follow documentation carefully when setting up an iTools server for the first time or risk causing problems that can be solved, but will take more time and effort than is required for the relatively small amount of reading necessary to accomplish a successful installation. I do not recommend anyone installing it on any production machine just to test drive in case there is an error commmitted in the installation and setup process. We've been running iTools since 2000 and are extremely happy with iTools and Tenon.

"iTools 7: Caused more problems than it solved"

    April 30, 2004  |   By kfranklin--2008

    Version: Tenon iTools 7.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was looking for software to setup virtual servers on Mac OS X server 10.2.8. This product looked like the hands down winner. I downloaded the trail and installed it. I set up two virtual servers. When I navigated to one of them the first time after set up, it seemed to be working. Then I tried navigating to the other site, I got a browser error that it could not connect. I then retried the first, it no longer worked either. I deleted both servers and tried again. Same results. Having now spent several long hours attempting to get this to work, I gave up and ran the "uninstaller" It looked like it ran just fine. I rebooted and then tried to restart the OS X Apache server. It no longer will start up. Along with this, I have an FTP error state "undeterminate state". Thanks tenon, looks like its time to reinstall my server. I am sure my customers will understand.

"very good but its limitations will bother"

    July 29, 2003  |   By charlietuna

    Version: Tenon iTools 7.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
iTools is a good product for the easy installation and easy configuration of these software packages. I used MySQL, ProFTPd, Apache, bind, and PHP. The product was stable and allowed me to build and test a PHP application with very little hassle or confusion. However, the PHP package does not support anything beyond the minimum for the entire iTools package... so it supports MySQL but not PostgreSQL. I wanted to learn PostgreSQL and when I found that the iTools PHP had not been compiled with pgsql support, I had to give up on the entire package. Also the PHP does not have built-in IMAP support despite the fact that iTools includes an IMAP server, so packages like Twiggi would not function.
