    "Trashes Hard Drives Easily"

    September 28, 2009  |   By J0EFAB

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Techtool Pro works great in most of its functions, but I'd avoid the OPTIMIZATION part as it often freezes in the middle and your drive is basically toast after that and I mean SERIOUSLY TOAST!

You would think something like this would not trash your hard drive, but nope. Techtool Pro 5 completely froze and trashed the drive completely.

I lost everything on my boot drive and have yet to be able to make it bootable and will probably just have to re-install MacOS X 10.5 from scratch. Oh, and Techtool Pro's Volume Recovery function was NOT able to fix the damage that it did! Sounds like a joke, but not funny at all. :(

Thank God I keep all my important files on other drives.

So be forewarned on that, um, feature. Everything else in TechTool Pro works great.

    "Can't uninstall it"

    August 25, 2009  |   By ismatta

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.5

    Pros

It give you a quick check of a few drive conditions

    Cons

It doesn't do very much, and it has been problematic with not being able to fully uninstall it

    Summary

It does very little for the amount of money they charge for the program. The latest version is buggy, and creates a mess to clean up. I would avoid this software even if it was free.

    "Leaves the computer a mess"

    July 21, 2009  |   By Froggies--2008

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Every time I've run this, afterward programs won't open (or, sometimes, won't quit), the computer acts unstable, I have to then run Applejack or DiskWarrior to get things stable again. I don't know what happens, but it's scary to see what TechTool does to the system. It just gets weird.

    "Works for me."

    June 29, 2009  |   By 4whatitsworth

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I purchased the Mac Update bundle. I had trouble creating a bootable DVD and was able to clear up the problem through Micramat's tech support. Apparently, one of the links downloaded the installer disk image and not the DVD disk image. Everything is working great now and I know that if I have any questions, I can count on their great tech support!

    "Bypass this nightmare..."

    June 4, 2009  |   By lexicon5_

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Never had an issue with v.4.x. Bought V.5, ran all the checks, probes, tools and now a once speedy MacBook Pro AND a Mac Pro take twice as long to boot than before I "Optimized" my files/folders etc. Unless you REALLY need to try to salvage a drive...you're better off backing up your data, wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS and apps and pulling your data back over and your machine wont slow down.

As for their idiotic update practices....they are pretty much the WORST company in history for what they charge for mere point updates and similar practices.

I did buy it with the current MacUpdate bundle for $49.95 so I got a deal....as well as the latest Parallels...these are the full versions...no neutering...

"In a word, don't install it. Actually 5.0.2, beta?"

    February 11, 2009  |   By RustyTrusty

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.1

    Pros

Nothing and I'll never purchase another Micromat product again!

    Cons

Crashed multiple programs i.e. iPhoto, my HP printer and scanner, Norton program et al. I had like 8,000 fragments, never more than one or two hundred before and I run it about biweekly.

    Summary

I ended up deleting it and reinstalling v. 4.6.2 I've NEVER had a problem with previous versions before. Supposedly it, (5.0.2), was a "total software redo", actually, a total FU, "Due out in late Nov., then Dec., then Jan and I got it in Feb.

    "Upgrade policy ridiculous"

    February 11, 2009  |   By tech331

    Version: TechTool Pro 5.0.1

    Pros

    Works reasonably well

    Cons

Doesn't do much that you don't find on Mac system utilities other than offer pretty buttons

    Summary

Their upgrade policy is absolutely ridiculous -- a company policy of planned, quick obsolescence, accompanied by PAID UPGRADES for minor versions (which happen whenever Apple updates ITS software)

"Does everything easily in an all in one package"

    October 31, 2008  |   By Kerry Dawson

    Version: TechTool Pro 4.6.2

    Pros

Fast, easy to use interface. Does everything from checking hardware to testing the OSX file and volume structures. Also maintainenance of volume structure and defrags the disk. Creation of edisk to boot to in case of problems provides a way to repair

    Cons

None really. For a very serious volume structure problem though, Disk Warrior might have to be employed as it is more comprehensive. However, this is all Disk Warrior does and it is pricier than TechTools pro. I've yet to need to use Disk Warrior.

    Summary

Included with AppleCare if you purchase that. If you don't have that, its a valuable tool to have to help ensure your system is functioning at peak. However, backups remain critically important. I've seen too many people loose valuable data due to corruption or just a complete HD failure and in the case of a mechanical failure you should have at least one good backup system to go with Techtools Pro. I use 4 different backup systems and always have Techtools running in background and due periodic maintenance checks etc.
