"Expensive, user-unfriendly, limited usefulness"

December 30, 2011  |  By NickZac

 |  Version: TechTool Pro 6.0.3

For the price, there are no pros

Price, Stability, User Friendliness

TechTool Deluxe wasn't a great system, but it was free with AppleCare. I downloaded it and used it with 10.6. It never found an error nor did it ever cause an issue. It seemed to do nothing more than what the Apple Hardware Test can, and a few of the things the Disk Utility can (but not all by any means). TechTool Deluxe does NOT work correctly on OS X 10.7 'Lion' and it seems that the makers intend it to be this way (as they want you to pay to upgrade). The user interface on Pro looked great and I tried it because of this. At its price, I knew it was a gamble. I think I lost.

As noted, this does not correctly back up the directory of the intended drive on multiple drive systems. A free program, like Carbon Copy Cloner does this with ease, so why can't this?

Even beyond that, its usability for OS X 10.7 is less than pleasing. What exactly do the diagnostics and repairs do? I cannot tell you. For both the Deluxe and Pro, they did nothing for me. I guess it is kind of hard to repair an already stable OS.

What do the other features do? Honestly, nothing that a variety of other *free* programs can't also do. The optimization and cleaning is done better by Onyx (free). Actually the cleaning and optimization abilities of Onyx are far better than TechTool Pro in terms of capability and stability. The ability to monitor the system is done better by iStatPro (free), with lesser resources being used. The cloning and bootable partition creation is done better by CarbonCopyCloner (free). Most of the other things it does are done automatically by 'Lion', or can be done using one of its numerous utilities (like Disk Utility). Perhaps its "accidental deletion recovery" works well, but I never used it. How often do you delete useful files "accidentally"? Considering you have to go through 3 (sometimes more) steps in Lion to perma-delete them, I can't say I have EVER done this.

Operating stability is questionable. I've had it exit unexpectedly or require a 'forced quit' more than once, and after reading some horror stories about it harming systems, I decided to uninstall it.

Ultimately, OS X 10.6 and 10.7 are well developed, exceptionally stable, and self-sustainable systems without major maintenance needs. This in itself makes the value of optimization software questionable (with the exception of Onyx, which has some features which have been proven to benefit 'Lion'). At least from my perspective, TechTool Pro is a rather poor and costly solution to a problem which doesn't really exist. I would advise passing this one up until some major changes occur.

"TechTool used to be fine 10y ago"

Cannot see any advantage over DiskUtility & functioning Backup (Time Machine).

- does not solve problems.
- does not work with Apple RAID card
- flashy but user-unfriendly interface
- poor explanations of problems found and measures taken

Overall, TechTool Pro is a program with colorful illustrations and symbols. It is however completely unclear what it does to keep your mac moving. I am waiting for someone to provide evidence (images before and after of analysis) that it does something useful.

"Same Horrible Taste More Damaging! Absolute Data Killer"

December 15, 2011  |  By imrananwar

None. This is absolutely a horrible piece of software engineering and will cause data loss when given a chance.

Unreliable. Crashes. Hangs. Destroys directories. Does NOT back up the directory of the drive you really want it to. WARNING: Causes Data Loss AND causes HARD DRIVE BECOMING UNUSABLE.

I never learn. After being ripped off with false promises of "free next version if you buy this", not getting those, getting a copy after complaining to them and finding it did not work, etc. I was suckered in again, this time by the MacUpdate promo bundle for $50 for 12 programs. TechTool Pro 6 immediately proceeded to make that cost turn into $500.

The first drive that I used it on, which was giving me problems, could not be fixed by this program, which would keep crashing or hanging. I finally gave up and formatted the drive and restored from a backup. Next, I ran TTP6 on my external drives and rebuilt the directories on them. (I ran Disk Utility before and that showed no errors in either).

TTP6 showed some positive changes from a directory rebuild so I went ahead and applied those. Result, not only did one drive become unbootable until I formatted it and restored using disk utility,

The second drive was so badly damaged that now Disk Utility & TTP6 hang when I try to format or partition it! I have just had to literally throw away a 160GB Lacie drive that had served me fine as a backup drive until I ran TTP6 on it tonight.

AVOID TECHTOOLS PRO 6 like the plague that it is.
