Editors' Review

Digital music is all well and good, but who wants to type in album and artist information for each track? With the free TagScanner, you don't have to. This efficient and powerful tag editor lets you edit metadata automatically as well as by hand, both for individual files and file batches.

The automatic tagging feature is most impressive. Although it can hit up online databases such as FreeDB, Discogs, and Amazon like many other auto-tagging apps, it can also generate tags from file and folder names--something many others can't. It works in the opposite direction, too, generating filenames from tags.

TagScanner has an elegant and orderly interface, and lets you preview filenames before applying changes. The only catch is that you'll need to spend some time learning the program's file- and tag-naming language. However, if you have thousands of music tracks crying out for organization, that's a small price to pay.

"Current version bundled with unwanted adware"

February 28, 2013  |  By tchntm43

 |  Version: TagScanner 5.1.630

The program itself is as useful as the other comments mention.

The current version comes with bundled software that nobody in their right mind would want on their computers. See Summary for details.

During the installation, it requested to install WhiteSmoke Toolbar. You do not want this. Firefox identifies it as a known stability and security vulnerability. You can remove it after installing it. Make sure to remove both the browser plugin as well as removing it from your computer's Add/Remove programs.

While it was nice that it at least asked about WhiteSmoke, it did not ask permission before installing the other two nasty programs. The first is called Iminent. Do a google search on this and you'll find loads of reports about this being a browser redirecting malware, sometimes it is referred to as a "click-jack". This is installed as a program onto your computer. There was no browser plugin to remove. Some users report being unable to remove this, and that it disabled Malwarebytes, but I did not encounter that problem. The second additional program is called GetSavin. This is another seemingly innocent "toolbar" that is adware... it throws ads for its website when visiting other webpages. There is no reason for any sane person to want this installed. Fortunately, very easy to uninstall.

"Easiest and Flexible Tool For Tagging Audio Files"

February 16, 2013  |  By PJFTL

 |  Version: TagScanner 5.1.630

Tag info obtained from FreeDB, TrackType, Amazon (Major global sites), Discogs, MusicBrainz and Beatport, customize various tags based on how you want to see them, developer is very responsive for support, Handles ID, create your own tags, supports various tag formats, very user friendly.

None at this time.

I searched a lot of places and tried a lot of different tag programs people rave about and found they all had serious shortomings. I stumbled upon Tag Scanner and without making any changes it was usable right out of the box, it was easy, and it got me the results I was looking for. Currently my music DB sits at over 28,000 files and each one I have put through Tag Scanner. I was very surprised at how easy it was to customize tags, plus if I had music that was so obscure none of the online databases had the info on, I was able to use my own values and save it so you wouldn't know. In my opinion, the reason why TagScanner is successful is because it had a single purpose and doesn't try to be something it's not. This is one of those little gems you have to give it an honest try to believe.
