"Don't install this unless you are a masochist!"

April 16, 2009  |  By tchatterton

 |  Version: SystemSuite 9 Professional 9.0.2.3

Pros

Keeps your system clock updated in a timely fashion. Many of the suite's tools can be useful.

Cons

The main resain for having System Suite is so that you can have a smoothly running PC w/o problems. Version 9 *creates* problems - LOTS OF THEM!! You can't even surf the net without problems - and it doesn't matter which version of Windows you use.

Summary

This used to be a decent suite years ago- I first learned about it from the FOSI warez site and ended up buying it after reading great reviews and finding that I liked it. It was an inexpensive and small alternative to the overpriced cobbled together BLOATWARE from Norton. I've updated SS over the years, even though suites went out of favor. I could put it on my less techie friends, siblings and parent's computers and feel somewhat safe. Then came SS 9. My first big mystery is why every time I tried to open websites I got a system pop-up telling me that there was a Script Error on the page - this happened constantly - and the damn pop-up refused to go away. I'd have to shut IE. At that time I was on a PC using Vista. Then it happened on my XP laptop. And my girlfriend's XP PC - and both of my parents began emailing me about not being able to use IE. I knew that it was something that we all had installed - and I'd installed SS 9 on all of them. I removed SS 9 and my IE issue vanished. Unfortunately, before I removed SS 9 from my father's PC he went & visited a bunch of celebrity websites. Some were sites that forced malicious software to be downloaded onto his PC. One was that nasty Anti-Virus 2009 - I'd assumed that SS 9's Active Protection anti-virus to catch that stuff as it downloaded. Nope. I used special software to scan his PC and he was infested with so many trojans, adware, malware, etc, that I lost count and stopped scanning. I thought I had most of it off - how could an anti-virus system set to scan every other day let this infestation happen??? I removed SS so he could use IE, but a day later his motherboard melted down mysteriously. A vicious virus was the cause, I'm sure. We had to replace his PC. Thanks Avanquest & System Suite 9. It's buggy junk - it's worthless and your PC is *not* protected by the anti-virus! That's one of the major reasons that I had it on my father's PC!! After the Internet Explorer fiasco with the Script Errors pop-ups, I wrote Avanquest's support people a long detailed description of the problem that I'd discovered, and told them that it was a cross-platform problem. They sent me a robo-email to say they'd got my email. That was two months ago or more. Not a word from them. Final word: Run away ? run away from this program and don?t look back!!!

"Just a piece of junk!"

February 16, 2009  |  By k8bm

 |  Version: SystemSuite 9 Professional 9.0.2.3

Pros

Nothing. This product should be removed for the market.

Cons

How can they market this stuff? Called their tech support and they admitted it has problems. Ruined my desk top and laptop. I called HP Spport and they could not help. Advised me to reformat the hard drive.

Summary

I have successfully used Suite 7 and 8 but Suite 9 is junk!

"Malicious Garbage"

January 03, 2009  |  By jonthomp

 |  Version: SystemSuite 9 Professional 9.0.2.3

Pros

No socially redeeming qualities, although the box is very convincing.

Cons

Would not install from its own routine; once installed, would not uninstall; freezes Photoshop and some Windows routines.

Summary

I just spent an hour uninstalling SytemSuite 9. The first sign of trouble was that, after loading the software, Photoshop would not open. I decided to uninstall SS9. OOPS! The Win XP uninstaller froze and would not open. I went to Safe mode but the uninstaller would not work in Safe. I therefore tediously deleted each file in the program folder, many of which were dll files and would not delete. They are still there, like litter from a party gone terribly wrong. After manually deleting what I could, I rolled back Win to the day before. Now everything is working again, but what a waste of time and money. Now I get to test their 90-day money back guarantee.

"BEEN USING S/S FOR 4 YRS, BUT NO MORE, S/S9 TOO BUGGY!"

November 11, 2008  |  By I-B-DON

 |  Version: SystemSuite 9 Professional 9.0.2.3

Pros

I WAITED ON MY CELL TWICE TILL BATTERY WENT DEAD. BUT, THEY SURE MANAGED TO CHARGE MY CREDIT CARD PROMPTLY BOTH TIMES. ONCE WHEN IT BOUGHT THE SS9 BOX VERSION AND THEN WHEN I WANTED JUST TO BUY THE RENEWAL FOR THE SS8. AFTER THE BOX VERSION CRASHED!

Cons

I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN, THE ISSUES WITH EVERY YEARS UNINSTALL AND INSTALL PROBLEMS, OR THE POOR SUPPORT BY EMAIL OR BY PHONE NEITHER HAVE GOTTEN ME ANY REPLIES.WHAT'S REALLY BUGGING ME IS, I CAN'T UNINSTALL THIS SS8 NOW!!

Summary

I FEEL STUPID BECAUSE I HAVE RECOMMENDED SYSTEMSUITE TO MANY PEOPLE. I EVEN HAD ONE FRIEND COMPLAIN TO ME AFTERWARD HOW BAD SS WAS FOR HIM, ABOUT HOW TECH SUPPORT WAS NOT THERE!! LONG WAITS WITH NO END..JUST WAIT!!!. WE ALL EXPECT TO WAIT AND WE EXPECT RESULTS! BUT WHEN YOU GET.....ZIP, ZERO, NOTHING! YOU MOVE ON!! DON'T WASTE YOU TIME HERE!!!!

"Good for Windows XP but VISTA is left wanting"

November 02, 2008  |  By minyonthemad

 |  Version: SystemSuite 9 Professional 9.0.2.3

Pros

The virus scanner and virus protection are still very good, and a couple of new features - such as memory booster - come in handy for us less advanced VISTA users.

Cons

Several very important features are either buggy or downright fail to work with VISTA. First, the firewall is broken. Second - the disk defragmenter tool won't work. Third - registry cleaner fails to launch past the initializing stage.

Summary

If you are running Windows XP or earlier, the improvements and added functionality of System Suite 9 are neet. Unfortunately, the Windows world is steadily moving towards VISTA and 64-bit systems. With Quad core processors becoming more the norm for newer systems, and as the kinks in VISTA work themselves out, the PC user is going to drop XP for the added features in VISTA. System Suite 9 - based on my experience - is not designed to work well with VISTA. Many features users have come to rely on just plain fail - and the tech support for these failues is non-existant. You won't be able to use the Net Defense firewall. Registry cleaner is buggy at best, and can be down right destructive if you are not careful. JetDefrag and Registry Defrag fail to do more than analyze the drive before shutting down with an error. Start-Up comander is buggy, and crashes frequently. There is no improvement in the spyware detection, and no option to detect just spyware - you have to run a full virus scan. I find the system monitors included in VISTA to be superior to the SS9 version, and many tools - including clock sync - can be easily found in the OS with no improved functionality using SS9.

The GUI is a step backwards. They went from cool blue tones and sleek graphics to overbearingly brightness. They took a more minalamist approach to the design without making it any simpler. To use the full easy update option, you now have to go to the help menue, as the one in the AV/AS tab only updates your definitions now.

The system optomization options are a joke, with no real increase to my system's performance. That was true of SS8 as well, but I didn't mind it as much then because it was an unexpected new feature. Here, it's just another wistle they never improved on, and another aspect of the product that fails to delive on it's promises. The ZIP utilities are also useless, as what is included with VISTA is simpler to use and faster than System Suite. The recovery options are the same as SS8, though they become a bit buggy with VISTA at times. I always found the System Suite tools here of little to no use 99% of the time anyway, but again there are no improvements over what prior versions offered.

So, what does work well?

1. Anti-Virus protection - still does a very good job
2. Clean-up utilities - I didn't see any improvements from SS8, but the features remain strong, easy to use, and functional. This is easily the best feature of System Suite 9, and the only one I will miss if I switch to another product.
3. Additional features seem to be working out well - including the web site monitor designed to protect users from phishing and phony sites. Memory and internet speed optimizers have also improved performance - albiet only slightly.

Unfortuneately for V-COM, the only feature of what does work that is not easily replaceable is the clean-up utilities. Good security and anti-virus software of the same or higher quality can typically be found for free or at a lower price than this product - and they would likely have a working firewall program to boot - and that's the first and foremost reason people buy and use System Suite to begin with.

The worst failue of this product by far, however, is its tech support. Email support takes a week for a response (and that's a quick response), and with regards to the firewall issue, their recomendation was to use another company's fire wall. Waiting for phone support can cost you $25.00 and all your cell phone's monthly minutes - with wait times typically taking hours, and a very confusing menue that rivals government services in its inneficiency and needless complexity. It had to be designed to get you to hang up and not ask questions. So, the parts that are broken will remain broken and you won't be able to get your money back any time soon.

It's a real shame. I had relied on this product since before V-COM took it over. This is the last version I will buy. I will take the only tech support advice I was able to get and shop around for a new suite of services with a functional fire wall. I will uninstall this failure as soon as that happens, and will not purchase any advanquest or VCOM product in the future.

Don't upgrade to this product unless you never plan to upgrade your OS beyond the 32-bit version of XP. Even then, under no circumstances should you pay the list price of $59.99. System Suite 8 works just as well on your system and the added features of SS9 just aren't worth it. It's even hard to justify at the $19.99 price they had for existing System Suite users - but not impossible.
