Version: System Mechanic 9.0.3
"Love it. Have been using since Version 6"
Pros: I have been using SM Pro which has the Anti-virus, basic SM does not. I just put it on my 3rd computer and encounter none of the problems some described. The version 9 works with Win 7 which you can get free if you are already a registered user.
Cons: The anti-virus and firewall of PRO cannot be installed on a Win 7 computer. It is Win 7 that refuses to install it. Iolo has got to fix that as users of SM Pro may as well only have the basic SM.
Summary: I started with basic SM 6 on an older laptop and it made a big difference since it had a small memory and HD. It really kept it cleaned up very well and solved a lot of problems. About a year later I got a new computer and continued using it there and again had no problems with it thru the different version up to 8.5. Last year I decided to upgrade to SM Pro which has the anti-virus. Again it work perfectly and I had no problem. Version 9 came out several months ago to work on Win 7 and it continued to work with no problems on an XP computer.
Unfortunately, last week I bought a Win 7 computer and could not install from my disc but was able to get a download from the company of Pro Version 9 to install but did not have my anti-virus. I then found out that there are anti-virus programs that Win 7 does not recognize and will not install and you have no way of knowing what ones they are until you try and install it. This is a flaw in the Win 7 program as Microsoft has no business deciding what anti-virus a customer should or should not use. However, as usual, the other software companies will have to accommodate Microsoft and change their software accordingly. I read all kind of articles about the testing of Win 7 and never once did I ever see this anti-virus problem mentioned.
I highly recomment the use of SM to anyone. It has never hogged a lot of space on a computer and the first laptop I put it on only had a 40 GB hard drive and it caused me no problem. I have never had it interfer with anything I was doing when it was working in the background thru all the years I have used it.
When I could not get the SM PRO anti-virus installed I downloaded AVG for temporary use until iolo fixes the problem. SM did recognize that I have AVG which someone said it did not. I also hope the Win 7 firewall is better then previous Windows firewalls as I have to now use it instead of the SM PRO firewall.
