"Goodbye"

May 05, 2005  |  By amcgee

 |  Version: Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Goodbye, Norton Utilities for the Mac. I know that everyone else hated you, but I loved you. I was a former PC snob who had used NU since version 1.0 under MS-DOS, when the sight of seeing Peter Norton's arms folded on the box cover could still bring a tear to my eye. When I became a Mac fanatic, I was glad to find an old friend on this side of the fence. It was painful having to watch you endure the slings and arrows of hate from those who felt you just weren't up to par in your Mac incarnation, but I want you to know there was at least one person out here who still adored you. Unfortunately, I'm about to upgrade to OS X Tiger any day now, and that means I have to let you go. I'll really miss you. Ah, parting is such sweet sorrow. It's been a long, strange trip, and maybe someday we'll meet again in that big Apple graveyard in the sky. So long, old friend.

"It must be hard to know Software and Hardware"

August 17, 2004  |  By bartell314--2008

 |  Version: Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using Norton every since they made it for the Mac. I heard they were going to stop providing it for the Mac. So I switched to Tech Tool Pro 4. Norton always has complete every task in one hour. I expect the same from Tech tool Pro 4 product. Techtool Pro not only crashed it ran for about 10 hours. Tech tool Pro programmers need to go back to school or talk with Symantec.

"Should Be Continued"

June 06, 2004  |  By iGreg

Summary

It should not be ended by Symantec, NUM was finally coming along with its most recent OS X versions. I prefer it to TechTool Pro 4.

My recommendation is limited since NUM won't be of value as OS X progresses further.

"Speed frustrations"

April 07, 2004  |  By Why Not

 |  Version: Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I still have yet to figure out why it takes forever to load Norton off CD. I understand that CDs are much slower, but it sounds like the dang drive is doing a butterfly seek test while it loads. I went in an looked at the cd in Speed disk and notice that it is hardly optimized. What does it say when the program that is supposed to optimize one's drive is not optimized. I fully appreciate all Norton Utilities gives us, but it just seems that the higher the version, the slower things get. Almost ten minutes to load off the CD is ridiculous, even if they do say it will take up to that to load. Why, when other bootable programs run circles around it? I will still purchase Norton, but am getting rather frustrated with it.

"8.0.2 just saved me from erasing/reformatting hard..."

Summary

...drive!
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
One bad block on my primary internal hard drive was giving me some trouble. I ran TechTool Pro 4.0.1's surface scan and DiskWarrior 3.0.1's hardware operation, but neither seemed able to do anything about the bad block problems.

I then ran Norton Disk Doctor 8.0.2's surface scan this afternoon. The first time, it stopped part way through. The 2nd time, I got a delightful dialogue asking me if I wanted to repair the damage to my media, I guess by mapping around the bad block. Did I? I did and it did and no more problem.

I wasn't the greatest fan of NUM 8.0.1 because of several problems in "fixing" files I shouldn't have let it change. But NUM 8.0.2 with OS 10.3.2 and 10.3.3 on my 733-mhz G4 Quicksilver Tower and old 266-mhz Beige G3 (also with OS 10.3.2 and more recently 10.3.3) has been worth its weight in gold in repairing some problems (beyond the bad block) my other utilities didn't. In some features, TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior are superior to NUM (as well as to each other).

I'm in love with TTP 4.0.1 and DiskWarrior 3.0.1 but my fickle heart today goes out to NUM 8.0.2. Recommend it? For sure!

"Optimizing Does Help...."

February 29, 2004  |  By Morphis

 |  Version: Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
But as the Apple Doc #25668 basically says is MacOS X WILL REDUCE the need for continual regular defrag's.
But after major installs and large system updates I would recommend defraging.

Some may think HFS+(journaled) is the endall of disk repair and defrag. But not so, Sure HFS+(journaled) is very good but sometimes corruption WILL happen.
I have seen the Disk Utility stuff-up inodes during reformatting. So I always run a disk repair after reformatting.

But after saying all that symantec does need to get their act together. We want downloadable updates and a LiveUpdate Admin like the windows platform does and no the current LiveUpdate Admin system is cr4p downlaoding now over 80MB liveupdate packages does not cut it. And why not updatable boot CDs e.g. an updater that diskimages your old boot CD, updates the diskimage to the latest version and then burns that diskimage to a new CD

"A TOTAL Waste!!"

 |  Version: Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
You do NOT need Norton Utilities because:

1. You do not have to "optimize" a Mac OS X hard drive ( see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25668 ).

2. The directory tree is checked and fixed every time you power up or Restart your Mac. It runs its own version of Disk Doctor. It never hurts to do an occasional Restart if your computer is always on or in Sleep.

3. The only other common filing flaw may be due to wrong permissions. These can be very easily fixed by running the "Disk Utility" in your Applications > Utilities folder.

I have heard nothing but stories of nightmares and headaches when using external disk utilities. Apple is the pro of their own equipment. Don't play into other software companies' warning of gloom and doom. If you feel your Mac is not running up to normal speed, take it to a Mac Genius. I did it with my very old lime-colored Mac, and after they kept it for 5 hours, I paid $65 and got back an all new, faster-than-ever, running computer... all of my files intact, with all of their work guaranteed! They said I have many old, unused, programs on there. Norton would never have caught that.

Trying to run Norton on your own really isn't worth the gamble and headaches, and will probably be worthless in the long run.
