    "DESTROYED MY MONITOR"

    December 24, 2005  |   By japanime

    Version: SwitchResX 3.6.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Tried to use this when plugging my PowerBook G4 12-inch via DVD-to-S-video adapter to our plasma TV. Upon rebooting the PowerBook, the screen on the computer comes up white, and there's no way to get it back. Tried uninstalling, deleting the trash, zapping the PRAM, etc. etc.

I will be the first to admit that it's completely my fault for trusting this junk $hareware in the first place, but it still must be said: THIS CRAPTACULAR $OFTWARE HAS HOSED MY POWERBOOK.

    Merry Effing Christmas.

    "dangerous utility"

Stay away from this utility. Can screw up your display without any warning.
If it's the case, trash: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    /System/Library/ Displays/overrides/.
and get rid of this funky utility once for good

    "Irresponsible programming"

    December 23, 2003  |   By dinkyday

    Version: SwitchResX 3.2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
For the last hour I've been trying really hard to get something else beside a black screen on my PowerBook 12" 1Ghz - all thanks to this terrible program. I was presented with a huge list of options, obviously chose the wrong one, got no warning whatsoever and that was it. Black screen. No matter what keys I pressed (you'd think that pressing Escape 5 seconds after the resolution change would make the program realize something was wrong but no) nothing changed. Still looking for a solutions. Zapping the PRAM or NVRAM did not work. Booting up from an external drive and removing all the SwitchRes files did not either.

I AM MAD! Please state if your program is for hackers only. I'm an experienced Mac user (10+ years), help other people with their systems, work in the IT business so this didn't happen because I'm ignorant about these sorts of things...

In short: this is experimental alpha software and should come with a BIG warning!

    "Better Than Ever!!!"

    December 19, 2003  |   By Dennis Fleisher

    Version: SwitchResX 3.2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This utility is an absolute necessity for me. I have used 2 monitors for years, and every time I've made any kind of hardware change or (now with Panther) OS change, I expect something to be not quite right with my 2-monitor set-up.

And, about 2-3 years ago I stumbled on SwitchRes, and I've always been able to count on it to put everything back the way it was or to allow me to easily try out other screen setups and resolutions.

Simple, elegant, and it just does the job.

In a previous note I mentioned a problem. I had a corrupted installer. But, with a new installer, everything went smoothly and effortlessly.

Try it. Use it. Pay that shareware fee. It's worth every penny.

"SwitchRes delited - everything is good now"

    December 3, 2003  |   By exi33

    Version: SwitchResX 3.2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have send the mail to stephane@madrau.com. Found the adress in the ReadMe. Maybe it's not ongoing.

However - I have tryed much yesterday. Even deliting the files you're speaking about. After a lost workday I have fixed it by deliting all SwitchRes files and starting with the switched off monitor. Belive me, I'll leave my fingers from your tool now.

If you wanna have success with it, build a dialog, that will apear after changing resolution. If you wouldn't hit the OK-button (cause you can't see it), it will switch back after X sec. to the last resolution. Just the same apple do in there monitor tool.

And pleas think about how user would handle your tool, if they are not english nativ speakers. There is too much text with long words in the prefs and the ReadMe. Sorry, but it's not a big software. It's even a tool. It only has to work. Even I don't have the time to read all that stuff. Maybe that was my misstake. ;-)
Keep it quite simple! I think you have to work on the icons. Good icons mean better understanding and less translation.

    Good luck with it, exi

Ditto on the excellent support! I've been working with the author for about a week, sending crash logs and testing different versions. With the final release, all the problems I was having was fixed! I am now running my Sony GWIII 50 inch LCD TV at 1280x720 and it looks beautiful!

I've never had this quick response with a software developer in my life. Go register this today!

    "Home Theatre"

    November 26, 2003  |   By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

    Version: SwitchResX 3.2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Having used a lot of shareware over the years, I have never had one respond so quickly to my personal situation. I have a Sony VPL-11HT widescreen projector and have never been able to achieve a widescreen resolution (yes, I've edited the windowserver plist file, and changed just about everything I could) - I have had no problem from my PC with thanks to a utility called PowerStrip - but the Mac was unusable with a display that does not pass the DDC information - until now.

Playing DVDs on a 1366x768 screen looks beautiful when projected on a 10ft screen. Many thanks to Stephane!

I do agree with a comment here that the interface could use a little overhaul, but the software works perfectly.

by the way, Zotan, have you simply restarted with the shift key depressed to force the card to re-synch with the monitor?

    "Beware"

    November 22, 2003  |   By burlyvz

    Version: SwitchResX 3.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
THIS IS THE SAME TEXT THAT I EMAILED TO THE DEVELOPER - MAYBE SOMEONE HAS A SUGGESTION TO RESOLVE THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM

    i am running a dual 1.25/512/SD with a radeon 9000. running 10.3.1.

downloaded and installed your app and then i was scrolling through the "extra" resolutions that were listed as compatible with my display which is a samsung syncmaster 763mb, VGA. i selected one of the extra resolutions, 1152/768(maybe 870) (i think the second number is correct) and the refresh rate that was listed which was a very strange 82hz. i clicked on this and my display went black and then a "sync not supported" message was scrolled across the screen.

now that is all the monitor will display when hooked up to my radeon 9000. other displays will work just fine with that card, i've tried several.

the display works fine when plugged into other video cards, including the older PCI radeon that i had stored in a closet. that's the one i'm using right now. i've also tried the samsung on other g4s that are also running 10.3.1 and it has no problems at all. using similar ATI AGP cards.

anyway, i deleted preference files and all files related to switch res, but still no dice. every time i plug the samsung into my radeon 9000 i get the "sync not supported" message and nothing else.

i've repaired privileges, changed the resolution to 1024x768 at 85hz which is what it was before but nothing works.

i'm at a loss to explain this. have you had any other reports of this? seems like a major though obscure bug in your software.

    thanks for any suggestions
