Editors' Review

+

SuperDuper is a popular, powerful, and easy-to-use app for quickly creating a fully bootable backup (or "clone") of your hard drive, whether you're recovering from a mishap or just migrating between machines. Even better, SuperDuper is free if you don't want to pay for its more advanced features, including scheduling, scripting, and "Smart Updates" (which save you time by making incremental updates to backups using only recent changes).

SuperDuper's interface sets out to make backups painless. Less technical users will love its friendly, plain-language approach--for example, explicitly explaining what will happen when you press a button. More-experienced users such as admins and QA testers will find plenty of more sophisticated features, from premade and customizable scripts to the ability to easily maintain multiple OS versions across different drives. SuperDuper comes with a full user guide, responsive support, and access to active forums.

Data loss is inevitable, and every Mac user should have a reliable backup system. SuperDuper makes the process easy, effortless, and almost enjoyable.

"Always worked, never failed, even on complete restoral."

June 27, 2011  |  By jay_cowan

 |  Version: SuperDuper 2.6.2

Pros

Plug in the backup drive and walk away. Come back a little while later and it's done. How easy! "It just works!"

Cons

Ummmm. Oh, maybe it could figure out how to eject the backup disk from the desktop when finished. Like, it's sooo hard to do that after a perfect backup. Oh yeah, can they make a PC version too?

Summary

The most important piece of software in the Mac World. I tell everyone to buy it. It's saved my business twice now when the boot disk died.

"XLNT performance, Cloned my RAID 0 2TB in 3 hours-eSATA"

April 27, 2011  |  By rexer727

 |  Version: SuperDuper 2.6.2

Pros

Simple interface; Clones and makes System bootable (!); FAST working; secure

Cons

nothing to speak of, it works perfect

Summary

I gave SuperDuper a pretty difficult assignment, and that was Cloning my RAID 0 2TB volume that runs my PowerMac G5 externally, from an eSATA FirmTek SeriTek 2eEN4 Hot Swap RAID Enclosure through FirmTek 2SE2E Bus Masters (two of them in the G5 for the RAID boot volume, a 3rd for my iTunes Library, another FirmTek RAID Enclosure which is also 2TB in size), and finally through the G5 to an external FireWire 400 enclosure with a 2TB Hitachi SATA II 7200RPM HD! So you can see it was no easy task, and yet SuperDuper could apparently "see" all the various devices involved with the Cloning operation and successfully Cloned, and made bootable the Cloned image, and blessed the System folder too, apparently according to the log the program left me. So I was impressed to say the least, as there's probably nothing more difficult than what I asked of the program and it succeeded 100%, as I booted the Mac G5 off the FireWire HD to check the System folder and it worked perfectly fine!

Previously I was using Time Machine with my RAID system, but it's gotten to be so cumbersome and inadequate to use Time Machine, with backups taking forever and some failures with the utility also, so I gave up on Time Machine 100% with that particular RAID volume. It works fine with my wife's Mac Pro notebook, no problems there to an external FireWire WD 1TB My Book Pro, but the backup of my RAID volume in the G5 just got out of control with Time Machine, hence I wanted to try a direct Cloning operation with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, and since Super Duper worked so well I didn't have to resort to using CCC, a big relief! The whole operation took about 3.5 hours, so it was not for the faint of heart shall I say, but I stuck it out and watched the whole operation and it was slow, methodical, and SuperDuper went about its duties one by one by one and got it done!

March 23, 2011  |  By ps2os2

 |  Version: SuperDuper 2.6.2

Pros

I tried another vendors and they wanted $ up front before trying so I went with CCC.

Cons

some adware that can be disabled.

Summary

I would not call this super fast but its not slow either.
It seems like a solid performer and at a decent price.

"The very best and easiest backup program to use!!"

December 08, 2009  |  By des Wann

 |  Version: SuperDuper 2.6.2

Pros

No problems with Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Gives you confidence knowing you have a proper backup and bootable external disk. Unlike other backup programs it had an easy learning curve, easy to edit settings when needed and has performed flawlessly.

Cons

None (and I've used it with Tiger, Leopard and and now Snow Leopard).

"Woks perfectly with Snow Leopard"

December 05, 2009  |  By erratikmind

 |  Version: SuperDuper 2.6.2

Pros

Does the job as advertised.

Cons

None that I know of.

Summary

Cloned my 320gb hard drive to a new 500gb/7200rpm hdd in about 1 hour and 18 minutes. All of the files and programs were intact. It cloned my Parallels 5.0 set-up, which included Windows XP Pro and all of my Autodesk AutoCAD files perfectly.
