""Free Expander" - Name "StuffIt" Says It All"

    December 25, 2004  |

    Summary

I needed to help my in-laws open an archive in the ultra-proprietary ".sit" StuffIt format. No problem, there's a Free StuffIt Expander. Except, that you can only get it by downloading a commercial "Standard" version of StuffIt. No problem, there's probably an Custom Install option to install only the Free StuffIt Expander and not the Nagware trial Standard Editon. Except, there isn't. No problem, the Uninstall routine will probably let you revert to the "Free StuffIt Expander." Except that it won't. No problem, when the trial is up, it will probably revert to the Free StuffIt Expander (that's all I wanted in the first place). Except that it doesn't. No problem, I'll look for a FAQ. Except that the tech support site doesn't respond. Fortunately, Google had cached a copy of the tech support page. THERE IS NO FREE EXPANDER!!! There's just an alternate interface to the standard program that you have to launch from a desktop icon -- double-clicking a .sit archive launchs the Standard Edition, which then Nags at you.

The command line for the "Free Stuffit Expander" icon is

    "C:\Program Files\Aladdin Systems\StuffIt\StuffIt.exe" -expand -uiexpander

so I'm going to try to associate that with the .sit file extension.

Meanwhile, this whole thing is a scam to try to get you to think that you need to buy the full Standard Edition, or, after the trial period, you're doing something wrong if you haven't. It's really a pathetic way to do business, in my humble opinion. And it's wasted a considerable amount of my time to research all of this. Blecch!
