"Direct Download of Expander 2009 and 2010"

November 24, 2009  |  By amcgee

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 13.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Here is the link to get the latest versions of Stuffit Expander, 2009 and 2010, without providing an email: http://my.smithmicro.com/downloads/trials/expander_mac.html And for the record, even though I don't use the Stuffit program for creating files, I LOVE the expander. It has always been the best free expander, better than The Unarchiver (at least, the last time I used it) or Mac OS X's built-in archive handling. That is a fact. Just because you hate the proprietary .sit format is no reason to bash the expander, which is a multi-unarchiver. Even if the .sit format disappeared tomorrow I would still use Stuffit Expander, because I like the way it works when uncompressing .ZIP, .RAR, and everything except else. I don't even care about .sit. Comments about the regular Stuffit program don't even belong in this topic, but people keep ignoring the rules and posting here anyway, even though what they say is totally irrelevant. This is the kind of behavior that makes PC users call Apple users nutjobs.

"The end of the road"

October 23, 2008  |  By sandhopper

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 13.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Since the software is not more from aladdin, it became buggy.
It is the end of the "sit" road since apple wants to jump to zip.

It is not stable and it is sometime out of control.

"When To Download StuffIt Expander 13:"

September 18, 2008  |  By zunipus

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 13.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
At such time as you run into a StuffIt archive (if ever these days) and it won't expand without version 13 (which is probably NEVER).

Same old story folks:
I was such a fan of the entire StuffIt Deluxe suite before the good programmers left and the thing was bought out by SmithMicro. Now it sucks out loud. And you'll find this same old story repeated around the world over and over. And yet, SmithMicro keep on pumping out pointless expensive upgrades to the program over and over until it makes you want to:
:-Q************

Let StuffIt D I E. No one needs it! You can get nearly all the functionality for FREE in Mac OS X itself and with several other FREE compression and encryption and password locking and backup options that DO IT BETTER.

And how about letting SmithMicro die as well. I bought their InternetCleanup v5.0 to try to address tracker cookies, and the thing was a POS. SmithMicro were very nice about giving me my money back. But they also gave me promises of repairs to the bugs that dragged on and on and on. The same thing happened to others who reviewed the program and got the same kind promises promises promises. Does anyone actually program over there? Or is this yet another disastrous implosion of a company that was so stoopid they let marketing take over leadership, the very last place marketing should ever be?!

Time to die.

"Works Flawlessly for me..."

It's amazing to read all the negative reviews, I get curious as to the different systems we must running. I have used stuffit expander since 1990 and it has always done what it says it will do, plus it is FREE!

What is this good for? I still use version 11 and have not hit any file that it could not open. So, why should I upgrade other than taking the risk of finding some incompatibilities like with Norton AntiVirus?

Please someone, make this util disappear. It used to be a flawless utility sans problems - now it's buggy, slow and dials home...not to mention obsolete.

"Another dud from Smith Micro"

November 28, 2006  |  By Christopher Midville

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 11.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The application launches okay on my MacBook Pro, but I cannot get the preference pane to open. I deleted all the Stuffit-related prefs as per the instructions in the Readme file, but nothing works. I can't use a version of Stuffit that won't let me tell it which file types it should handle.

I've gone back to 11.0.0. Really, I've stopped expecting anything better from Smith Micro.

If you pay - you can complain. Try and be fair on these guys. I still get .sit and .sitx archives. Expander is easy to find and download, DOES NOT need an email adress from the VT link and is regularly updated and totally free. Works every time for me. THANK YOU SMITH MICRO / ALLADIN

"Works fine for me"

November 23, 2006  |  By dasoe

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 11.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It works absolutely fine for me, version 11 also. I have not yet tried to expand a password protected rar file though, so can't say anything about that possible bug.

I again got the file without entering my email address - just clicked "Download now" in Versiontracker and I was done - I don't know why this seems to work for me only. But even if I had to give my mail address, I think this would be a fair price, I'd just unsubscribe when I get the first mail. Anyway, the email-collecting has nothing to do with the Software, and should not be a part of the rating in my eyes (besides from maybe the rating category "price"). We're all grown up and can decide if we want to give our mail or just resign under that circumstances. Rating the software one star because you have to give your email address is simply impossible if you are fair - just take a look at the rating categories.

"StuffIt Expander: Always on top"

November 01, 2006  |  By Thucydides

 |  Version: StuffIt Expander 11.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Here are the strengths of StuffIt:

  1. It expands pretty much any expandable format
  2. It pops in an out of existence as needed; you don't need to keep it running
  3. It couldn't possibly be easier to use; you just double click on the item you want to expand, StuffIt starts, you get a window with a progress bar, and StuffIt quits when it's done.
  4. It's fast
  5. It's pretty
  6. It's always been there; forever -- even back before System 6. People were using this program during the Reagan Administration. Running a Mac without using Stuffit Expander is, to my mind, inconceivable.
Here are the weaknesses of Stuffit:
  1. None.
It's free, and it does everything. To the person who's trying to use a corrupt archive from MS: Microsoft doesn't even support that application any more. You need to be using Flip4Mac. Live in the now, man.
