Summary
This is a great program for replacing the stock Windows 7 Start Menu (and all the clicking and scrolling you have to do to find anything). As of 25 Feb 2012, what you get from Download.com is freeware version 3.88 (StartMenu7_Setup_3_88_freeware.exe - 9.5MB). At www.startmenu7.com, you can also upgrade to the PRO version or (apparently) download version 4.19 (StartMenu7_Setup_4_19_freeware.exe - 14.8MB).
Given previous postings, before judging Start Menu 7, one needs to know how to set all the options--which are not totally intuitive--and are scattered around the interface. The following is for ver. 3.88: (1) You set one of four skins by clicking Options > Skin. (2) You can add or delete Commands or Folders from the main menu column by clicking the "plus" or "minus" icon next to your user name. (3) Click Options > Wizard > System Integration and Key tips for more options. (4) Click Options > Menu > Show Tray Icon to get an icon in the System Tray (which you can then right-click for the same context menu). (5) Click Options > "Enlarge" or "Reduce" to change the start menu's font size. Then (6) drag the edges of the Start Menu 7 window to size the window as you want.
(7) Unchecking "Shut Down" at Options > Wizard > Shortcuts causes the Shut Down button to disappear. To again show the Shut Down button (or whichever type of power button you want), RIGHT-CLICK the "Options" button and then choose from that context menu the kind of button you want to appear. You can actually show any number of Power Buttons by either checking them on the "right-click" Options context menu or checking them at Wizard > Shortcuts.
Once setup, you should be able to figure out how the rest of Start Menu 7 works. -
"Love this program"
Version: Start Menu 7 3.881
Pros
It works like it should.
Cons
I don't know of any.
Summary
I like how it blends well with Windows - no glitches. I can even use the Windows key to bring it up just like the built-in start menu had.
Also cool that it placed 'desktop' on it. I had a separate taskbar toolbar for desktop items and now I don't need it.
I noticed its fly away menu works faster than the built-in start menu when it comes to listing whats on the control panel.
Glad I got it.
